Description

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management, the Communications Director, plans and executes an integrated strategy to enhance the College's image and increase awareness of programs, departments, and accomplishments to internal and external audiences. The Director builds relationships with multiple stakeholders in order to enhance the institution's reputation and strengthen its brand. They lead the Office of Communications and Marketing, which includes two full-time direct reports and an intern and/or student worker.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement a distinctive and results-driven integrated communications strategy that encompasses advertising, publics relations, publications, digital and social media, and media relations.
  • Strengthens the College's position within the higher education marketplace by engaging with our key audiences to raise the profile of the College; attract a diverse, high-achieving student population; and engage alumni, donors, and community members.
  • Lead the development of communications materials on behalf of the College, including print and digital collateral, press releases, event scripts, video scripts, website and social media content, HTML emails and newsletters, and articles for the College's magazine.
  • Elevate communications by ensuring cohesive implementation of brand standards across all channels, platforms, and publications, including regularly updating and distributing the College's published style guide.
  • Serve as the College's media contact, maintaining the institution's media list, cultivating relationships with media contacts, and responding to all media inquiries.
  • Amplify the impact of alumni, faculty, staff, and students' achievements in local, state, and regional publications.
  • Build a culture of collaboration by managing regular campus-wide communications planning and information meetings to define and advance strategic events and objectives and develop a proactive communications plan and calendar.
  • Support select College-sponsored events hosted by various offices, including but not limited to academic affairs, advancement, alumni relations, and athletics.
  • Implement measurement tools and analytics to determine effectiveness of overall communication programs and initiatives.
  • Establish and, when needed, execute an appropriate crisis communication plan for the College.
  • Manage the budget and expenses for the Office of Communications and Marketing.
  • Serve on other College committees as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field with 5+ years of experience
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, editing, and public speaking
  • Ability to develop effective relations across diverse constituencies
  • Effective leadership and team building skills
  • Oversight of projects and resources including establishing priorities, managing timelines, and meeting deadlines
  • Experience working with outside vendors who provide services such as graphic design, photography, videography, and digital and social media content
  • Fluency in English (oral and written)
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Master's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience with website content management systems (e.g., Drupal)
  • Experience with email and social media platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, SproutSocial, etc.)
  • Proficiency using the software, hardware, and processes related to multimedia and graphic design production
