NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police are asking for the public to come forward with information about a shooting that left one man dead and another injured Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to Thompson Street, between Newhall Street and Shelton Avenue, just after 1 p.m. for the report of multiple shots fired.

New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said Michael Judkins, 26, was shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The second victim, a 20-year-old New Haven man, was shot in the leg and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Both victims are known to police, Jacobson said. Investigators believe the New Haven residents were in a vehicle when they were shot. Several evidence markers were placed next to a black Sedan.

During a Tuesday morning press conference, Jacobson expressed concerns over potential retaliation.

“There’s the potential, since Michael was so beloved in the city, for retaliation,” Jacobson said at a Tuesday morning press conference. “I’m asking everybody involved in this to not retaliate. Let us do our jobs. Please tell us what you know. We need the community’s help.”

Mayor Justin Elicker spoke with Ludkin’s mother Tuesday morning.

“Homicides are just tragic for our community,” Elicker said. “The family is devastated, and we again ask for the community’s help in solving these cases.”

So far this year, 171 guns have been taken off city streets.

The city’s eighth homicide of the year happened on the first day of school for New Haven students, worrying some neighbors.

“Anybody would be traumatized to see something like that, especially the loss of life. Just lucky no school children were around when all of this took place,” said Calvin Nelson who lives on Thompson Street.

He’s calling for a stepped-up police presence to combat gun violence in the city.

“It goes on all the time,” Nelson said. “At least once or twice a week, you hear rapid-fire out here in the neighborhood.”

Police have not identified any suspects in this case.
