RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened near the VCU campus Sunday evening.

Reports came in around 6:20 p.m. for a shooting in the 400 block of Gilmer Street.

Officers discovered one victim dead at the scene. RPD said on Monday afternoon that the victim has not been identified yet.

The Medical Examiner is working to determine a cause of death.

The VCU Police Department says a suspect in now in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

RPD is leading the death investigation.

Officers with RPD tell 8News that it’s too early to classify the investigation as a homicide. Despite VCU announcing there was a suspect in custody, RPD was unable to release information regarding a suspect or charges.
