WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — An off-duty Pawtucket Police officer involved in a shooting in West Greenwich that injured an 18-year-old man has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.

West Greenwich Police Chief Richard Ramsay the incident between the two men started on I-95 and ended in front of Wicked Good Pizza on Nooseneck Hill Road Wednesday evening.

Surveillance footage obtained by 12 News shows the moment the two vehicles involved – a white pickup truck and a black sedan – pulled into the parking lot.

In the video, the pickup truck pulls into the lot behind the sedan. Within seconds of parking his car, the driver of the truck hops out and walks towards them.

The driver of the sedan then backs his car up and attempts to drive off as the man with the gun follows him into the roadway. The man and the car then leave the frame, which is when investigators believe a single gunshot was fired.

The Rhode Island District Attorney’s Office identified the off-duty officer as Daniel Dolan and said he was on his way home from a police detail in Pawtucket when the incident occurred.

Pawtucket Police Chief and acting Public Safety Director Tina Goncalves said her department is “waiting for further information on the investigation,” but in the meantime, Dolan has been placed on administrative leave.

The AG’s office claims Dolan was attempting to detain the driver of the sedan, but did not explain why.

Ramsay believes Dolan must’ve seen something on the highway that he perceived as “bad.”

Dolan, according to the AG’s office, shot the West Greenwich man once in the arm. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

While Dolan wasn’t injured in the ordeal, Ramsay said he is shaken up.

“The officer seems to be OK at this point, but it’s always traumatic when you’re involved in a shooting like this, so we are worried about him,” Ramsay said.

The AG’s office said there was also a passenger in the sedan when the incident took place, but that person wasn’t hurt.

The incident is currently under investigation by the R.I. State Police, with the assistance of the West Greenwich Police Department and the R.I. Attorney General’s office.

Ramsay is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact West Greenwich Police at (401) 397-7171 or R.I. State Police at (401) 444-1000.
