Food for Thought: Creating & Applying Inclusive Pedagogical Strategies - MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS

The organizers of the Food for Thought workshop on Creating & Applying Inclusive Pedagogical Strategies have decided to shift to a more central focus on mental health. We’re hoping to strike a balance around these questions: how can we take care of ourselves and support our students at the same time? There will be some time for unstructured conversation as well as workshopping around specific strategies that have worked (and perhaps those that haven’t).

Food for Thought Workshop

SAVE the DATE:  Nov 4th, noon - 1:30pm

This multi-modal workshop brings together perspectives and practices on inclusion in the classroom from faculty and students. We will begin by introducing the importance of explicit and implicit pedagogical attention to inclusion on our syllabi and in our classrooms. We will then pivot to small groups in which participants can learn how to put these ideas into practice. We have designed this session to be interactive so that attendees can engage with other participants who share similar goals. Questions we will encourage participants to explore include: Why include an inclusivity statement on your syllabus; how can you write one so that it sounds genuine and personal rather than forced or canned? How does attention to preferred pronouns impact students’ experiences in the classroom? How can you diversify your reading list and what will it say to your students about your course and your field? And, perhaps most importantly right now, what impact will these however-subtle or -significant changes have on our students’ mental, physical and intellectual well-being? Throughout the session, we will share examples, ideas, and tools that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom.

All community members are welcome to attend. It's understood that some may need to leave early or arrive late.

Logistics: Lunch will be provided for those who registered in advance. Others looking for conversation and connection on this topic are welcome to join us and bring their own lunch. We’ll accommodate up to the COVID-ized room capacity. Because of format we are not offering a virtual option and will not be recording. Handouts will be posted on Morgan Center Canvas site.

Just a reminder that we’ve compiled: a) some syllabus resources for mental health, all of which can be applied as midstream course/project strategies; b) suggestions for reaching out to academic advisees.
