WPI Alert System

The WPI Alerts service gives campus leaders and security professionals the ability to reach all students and staff with time-sensitive information during unforeseen events or emergencies using voice, email, and text messaging. During critical situations, WPI officials can use the system to broadcast pertinent information and provide details on appropriate response.

By providing accurate, up-to-date emergency contact information, you enable WPI Alerts to send simultaneous text messaging, voicemail, and email to you and your designated emergency contacts.

Signing up is easy. Log in to WPI Alerts with your WPI user name and password and then enter at least one mobile number. Your WPI email address is automatically enrolled and cannot be removed.

What contact data should I provide WPI?

WPI Alerts allows storing of up to three mobiles phones, three voice only (landline) phones, and two additional email addresses. Your WPI email address is automatically added and cannot be removed. The best emergency contact number is probably your mobile phone. Please provide us with multiple points of contact points to ensure message delivery.

I received an error while enrolling a mobile or voice only number.

Ensure that you are entering the number as only ten digits, without any hyphens or other symbols.

Can I enroll my office phone number?

We recommend not enrolling campus numbers as a point of contact in emergencies. The campus phone system can only handle a limited number of simultaneous incoming calls. Calls from WPI Alerts will be throttled to ensure lines are available in the event of an emergency.

How will I know the message is from WPI Alerts?

All WPI Alerts will be from the following senders:

How does the WPI Alerts system respond to busy signals or no-answer situations?

For busy signals, the call will be repeated several times in an attempt to reach you. The same is true for no-answer and call-waiting. If the phone is answered by a message recorder, the message will be left on the answering device. If, after several attempts the call does not successfully go through, the system will stop attempting and report your number to be busy.

I provided multiple phone numbers, email addresses, and SMS, on which device will I get the message first?

WPI Alerts delivers messages to phones, emails, and SMS independently and simultaneously. That means if we were to send emergency messages, it will be delivered to all your available phone numbers at the same time; which means you may have your mobile and work/home phone ring concurrently. Email and SMS deliveries are dependent on your service providers and in most cases, they come through quite fast.

I received the message but it kept looping/repeating. Why?

The system is designed to repeat the recorded voice message three times to ensure that you do not miss the beginning.

What happens after I sign up (opt-in)?

WPI Alerts has the capability to test mobile numbers and email addresses while you enter them. We suggest utilizing this feature to ensure delivery is working.

How do I opt-out?

You may log into the WPI Alerts portal at any point to remove or modify contact methods.

I am a parent or guardian of a WPI student. How can I receive alerts?

WPI switched to the RAVE emergency communication system to ensure better, faster delivery of phone, text, and/or email messages in the event of an emergency. WPI parents are eligible to receive WPI alerts by text; if interested, send a text to WPI Alerts (67283) with wpiparent in the body of the message. Your students should also visit the WPI Alerts website (WPI credentials required to log in) to update their own information. On average, this process takes less than five minutes. Contact the IT Service Desk directly at ITS@wpi.edu or 508-831-5888 with any questions or concerns.
