(New Hampshire Primary Source is a regular feature of WMUR's political coverage.)AOC CONTRIBUTION RETURNED. Congressman Chris Pappas’ campaign committee has returned an unsolicited $5,000 contribution from a political action committee overseen by liberal firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New Hampshire Primary Source has learned.A Pappas campaign spokesperson cited a “clerical error” as the reason for the refund, saying that “wire transfer information was given out in error” by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The Courage to Change PAC made the contribution to Pappas for Congress on March 29, two days before the close of the first quarter. The Pappas for Congress spokesperson said the refund was made after the April 1 start of the second quarter and will be reported in the committee’s second quarter report, due in mid-July.Pappas for Congress disclosed the refund when New Hampshire Primary Source asked for a response to attacks by Republicans after Pappas’ first quarter report was made public on Thursday night. The report listed the $5,000 contribution from the Courage to Change PAC among $95,000 in contributions Pappas received from PACs -- in a report that listed total receipts of $348,221.AOC’s PAC doled out $5,000 contributions to the campaign committees of 33 House Democrats, for a total of $165,000, in late March. POLITICO reported earlier this month that Reps. Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania, Carolyn Bourdeaux of Georgia and Elissa Slotkin of Michican, declined contribution or said they would return the funds. Apparently, they were concerned that voters in their swing districts would frown on the support from the outspoken progressive leader and member of the so-called "Squad" from the Bronx.NH-01 is viewed as a swing district as well. But the Pappas campaign spokesperson cited only the clerical error as the reason for the return. The POLITICO report said DCCC aides had provided the members’ wire transfer information to Ocasio-Cortez aides “without approval of more senior officials.” Early Friday, before the Pappas decision to return the contribution was first reported here, the NRCC sent out a press release entitled "Pappas is bankrolled by a socialist."“Every vulnerable Democrat who takes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s money has signed onto her insane socialist agenda that wants to defund the police, abolish private health insurance and open our borders,” NRCC spokesperson Samantha Bullock charged.Pappas is among 32 Democratic incumbents who are labeled “Frontline members” by the DCCC, meaning they are holding seats in competitive districts and are expected to face tough reelection challenges next year. It’s another way of saying they are viewed as vulnerable because of the “purple” nature of their districts. The DCCC says it will ensure that Frontline members "have both the resources and cutting-edge information they need to execute effective reelection campaigns. This cycle, our Majority hinges on winning these tough Frontline races."Pappas, though, last year was the first Democrat to win a consecutive second term in NH-01 since former Rep. Carol Shea-Porter did it in 2006 and 2008. Through Shea-Porter and Pappas, Democrats have now held 1st District seat in three consecutive elections.Lucas Meyer, who was the campaign manager for Pappas’ successful reelection bid last year, said: “Some free advice for the NRCC, which has repeatedly failed to win in a ‘R+1’ seat: stop making baseless attacks that New Hampshire voters can easily see through.“Granite Staters keep electing Chris Pappas because he delivers for us. His work got checks in our pockets, shots in our arms, and relief to our small businesses, veterans, and communities when Republicans turned their backs on us.“Republicans openly admit they plan to gerrymander New Hampshire and roll back the freedom to vote in order to anoint a Big Pharma bigot like Matt Mowers, who took $24,000 from insurrectionist members of Congress who voted to undermine our democracy.“But I know the people of our state won’t buy their cheap political stunts and will continue to reject their divisive politics.”John Corbett, who managed Republican challenger Mowers' 2020 campaign, responded to Meyer's attack."Returning checks from AOC is not going to hide the fact that Chris Pappas is bought and paid for by the radical left and corporate special interests in Washington," Corbett said. "He lied to the people of New Hampshire about his cozy relations with corporate lobbyists while he has taken over $1.5 million in special interest PAC money and voted with Nancy Pelosi every step of the way. New Hampshire deserves better than Pelosi’s puppet.”Pappas received a $5,000 contribution from a PAC affiliated with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and smaller contributions from the committees of 10 other House Democratic colleagues.

A Pappas campaign spokesperson cited a “clerical error” as the reason for the refund, saying that “wire transfer information was given out in error” by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The Courage to Change PAC made the contribution to Pappas for Congress on March 29, two days before the close of the first quarter.

The Pappas for Congress spokesperson said the refund was made after the April 1 start of the second quarter and will be reported in the committee’s second quarter report, due in mid-July.

Pappas for Congress disclosed the refund when New Hampshire Primary Source asked for a response to attacks by Republicans after Pappas’ first quarter report was made public on Thursday night.

The report listed the $5,000 contribution from the Courage to Change PAC among $95,000 in contributions Pappas received from PACs -- in a report that listed total receipts of $348,221.

AOC’s PAC doled out $5,000 contributions to the campaign committees of 33 House Democrats, for a total of $165,000, in late March.

POLITICO reported earlier this month that Reps. Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania, Carolyn Bourdeaux of Georgia and Elissa Slotkin of Michican, declined contribution or said they would return the funds.

Apparently, they were concerned that voters in their swing districts would frown on the support from the outspoken progressive leader and member of the so-called "Squad" from the Bronx.

NH-01 is viewed as a swing district as well. But the Pappas campaign spokesperson cited only the clerical error as the reason for the return.

The POLITICO report said DCCC aides had provided the members’ wire transfer information to Ocasio-Cortez aides “without approval of more senior officials.”

Early Friday, before the Pappas decision to return the contribution was first reported here, the NRCC sent out a press release entitled "Pappas is bankrolled by a socialist."

“Every vulnerable Democrat who takes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s money has signed onto her insane socialist agenda that wants to defund the police, abolish private health insurance and open our borders,” NRCC spokesperson Samantha Bullock charged.

Pappas is among 32 Democratic incumbents who are labeled “Frontline members” by the DCCC, meaning they are holding seats in competitive districts and are expected to face tough reelection challenges next year. It’s another way of saying they are viewed as vulnerable because of the “purple” nature of their districts.

The DCCC says it will ensure that Frontline members "have both the resources and cutting-edge information they need to execute effective reelection campaigns. This cycle, our Majority hinges on winning these tough Frontline races."

Pappas, though, last year was the first Democrat to win a consecutive second term in NH-01 since former Rep. Carol Shea-Porter did it in 2006 and 2008. Through Shea-Porter and Pappas, Democrats have now held 1st District seat in three consecutive elections.

Lucas Meyer, who was the campaign manager for Pappas’ successful reelection bid last year, said:

“Some free advice for the NRCC, which has repeatedly failed to win in a ‘R+1’ seat: stop making baseless attacks that New Hampshire voters can easily see through.

“Granite Staters keep electing Chris Pappas because he delivers for us. His work got checks in our pockets, shots in our arms, and relief to our small businesses, veterans, and communities when Republicans turned their backs on us.

“Republicans openly admit they plan to gerrymander New Hampshire and roll back the freedom to vote in order to anoint a Big Pharma bigot like Matt Mowers, who took $24,000 from insurrectionist members of Congress who voted to undermine our democracy.

“But I know the people of our state won’t buy their cheap political stunts and will continue to reject their divisive politics.”

John Corbett, who managed Republican challenger Mowers' 2020 campaign, responded to Meyer's attack.

"Returning checks from AOC is not going to hide the fact that Chris Pappas is bought and paid for by the radical left and corporate special interests in Washington," Corbett said. "He lied to the people of New Hampshire about his cozy relations with corporate lobbyists while he has taken over $1.5 million in special interest PAC money and voted with Nancy Pelosi every step of the way. New Hampshire deserves better than Pelosi’s puppet.”

Pappas received a $5,000 contribution from a PAC affiliated with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and smaller contributions from the committees of 10 other House Democratic colleagues.
