Cost of living in New Hampshire highest year-to-year since 1990, according to US Bureau of Labor
Data suggests the cost of living surge is the highest year-to-year since 1990.
According to a new report on inflation, the cost of goods and services in the Northeast rose 6.6% between February of 2021 and last February.
The percentage is lower than the nationwide average of 7.8-percent.
One of the costliest parts of living in the Northeast is related to enduring winters, where New Englanders need to pay for heating fuel and winter clothing.
In the region, electricity prices surged by 12.3%, utility gas service increased 20.3% and motor fuels rose by 36.4 percent.
At a U.S. House hearing on Wednesday, Congresswoman Annie Kuster, D-NH, was among a number of lawmakers accusing six oil executives of price gauging.
"And yet while consumers are getting pinched at the pump, oil companies have been raking in the profits and pushing for policies that will only make our country more dependent upon oil,” Rep. Kuster said. "To the 6 oil companies before us today, you made more than $75 billion in profits last year and it looks as though based on your first quarter - you're on track for record profits again.”
Kuster went on to say, it's past time the United States invested in long-term energy independence through clean and renewable energy.
