TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Skyway Bridge connecting Pinellas and Manatee Counties was closed Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the bridge would be closed once winds reached 40 mph. As Hurricane Ian pushed high winds into the area, troopers said hurricane-force winds ripped across the bridge and ranged from 65 to 75 mph.

The Bridge will remain closed until the storm passes and the inclement weather subsides, FHP said.

FDOT officials added the Skyway bridge will be one of the first inspected for damage once the storm passes.

Gov. DeSantis also confirmed the Skyway was closed in a press conference Wednesday morning.
