Shootings are up 51% in New Orleans in 2021
A recent string of shootings in New Orleans further boosted gun violence numbers in 2021, which, so far, are outpacing last year's numbers.
Six shootings in New Orleans since Monday morning left one person dead and eight people wounded, according to preliminary information from the New Orleans Police Department.
Among the injured were three juveniles, including a 12-year-old who was struck when walking in the Desire neighborhood where suspects in two vehicles were shooting at one another.
In a separate incident, an infant boy and a juvenile girl were wounded when suspects fired at their vehicle while traveling west on Interstate 10 near the Louisa Street exit.
It's the eighth interstate shooting this year within city limits.
Monday's shootings followed a weekend that saw seven shootings with 12 victims, including an incident on Bourbon Street in which five people were wounded.
Data from the New Orleans City Council's crime dashboard shows there have been 207 shootings in New Orleans through April 26. That's a 51% increase from the 137 shootings on the same date last year.
Fatal shootings have increased 21% this year, with 52 logged as of Monday. New Orleans' murder count stands at 55, compared with 174 for all of 2020.
Nonfatal shootings are dramatically higher, so far, in 2021, with 155. A year ago, there had been 94. New Orleans ended 2020 with 429.
Armed robberies, which include all weapons, are up 15% this year, with the count at 142 through Monday.
Aggravated assault, which typically involves a weapon, has increased 45%, with 399 incidents counted as of April 26, according to city council figures.
