DOUG: THE EYEOPENER’S MATT REED IS LIVE IN DANVERS WITH WHAT WE KNOW AT THIS HOUR. MATT: WE KNOW THAT DOZENS OF PEOPLE WAITED IN LINE HERE AT THE DOUBLETREE IN DANVERS. A NUMBER OF THEM UNDER AGE 75. WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IS EXACTLY HOW THIS HAPPENED. IT ALL STARTED WITH A CHAOTIC SCENE EARLIER IN THE DAY YESTERDAY. THEN PEOPLE SAY AN ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE THAT HAD PEOPLE OF ALL AGES RUSHING DOWN TO GET A SHOT. CURATIVE TOLD US THEY DID HAVE EXCESS VACCINE THAT THEY DID NOT WANT TO WASTE. THEY DID NOT SAY HOW MUCH OR WHY THERE WERE SHOTS LEFTOVER. >> WE DID GET A MESSAGE SAYING THERE WAS EXTRA VACCINE AND TO PLEASE BE PATIENT. >> WE HEARD THE DOUBLETREE HAD 300 EXTRA VACCINES. Hundreds line up at Danvers COVID-19 vaccination site for chance at surplus doses
A line of people began to gather Wednesday afternoon outside the state's COVID-19 mass vaccination site in Danvers and the line continued for hours after people heard extra shots may be available there. While vaccines Wednesday were supposed to be open to individuals age 75 or over, several younger people said they got vaccinated. It appears the facility had hundreds of extra doses, so people of all ages were able to get the inoculation. NewsCenter 5 saw people in the line being allowed into the facility, but could not observe what happens inside."They did make the announcement that they had some extra vaccine and to please be patient," one woman said. Dr. Monica Bharel, of the Massachusetts Department of Health, said officials are constantly making updates to the vaccination rollout.“As we learned about increased lines, we put out messages to our mass vax sites to ensure that they work on their processes and make it clear to individuals that they can wait in their car, especially if they can come early, and at several of our sites we have the National Guard helping with the logistics,” Bharel said. The vaccination site, which opened last week in the DoubleTree Hotel, is operated by Curative. A spokesperson confirmed that an email went out offering patients with appointments later in the week the chance to get their shot on Wednesday in order to prevent some doses from going to waste. "The interest and high demand from patients to move their appointment time and receive their dose today did create a line outside of the site," Curative officials wrote in a statement. "New operational protocols were put in place to accommodate more patients inside of the DoubleTree as well as requesting patients to remain in their cars until their new appointment time."Curative also said patients who had appointments for Wednesday did not have to wait in the line. Officials did not say how many extra shots were available or why they had so much excess supply. Another reason people flocked to the hotel to wait in line may have been confusion over the procedural changes Gov. Charlie Baker announced Wednesday.Effective Thursday, Baker announced, an individual who accompanies a person age 75 or older to get the vaccine at a state mass vaccination site may schedule their own appointment to be vaccinated on the same day at the same site. “We want to make sure that we make it as easy as we possibly can for folks who fall into that over 75-year-old category to get vaccinated and to get vaccinated early in this process,” Baker said. The rule limits one caregiver to schedule their appointment along with the eligible resident, who must be age 75 or older. At the time of scheduling, the companions are instructed to indicate their status and must schedule their appointment for the same day. This is not the first time we've seen long lines outside a mass vaccination site. It happened Monday at Springfield's Eastfield Mall after the snowstorm caused cancellations on Sunday. Baker is now deploying members of the Massachusetts National Guard to help in administering vaccine. Ten members were originally sent to help in East Boston last week and additional teams of 10 medically-qualified soldiers will go to support the sites at Springfield and Danvers. Complete statement from Curative:"To date, Curative has provided more than 7,000 vaccines at the Danvers DoubleTree vaccination location. Today, some additional doses were available, and to avoid doses going to waste, Curative offered patients who were already registered with appointments later in the week to come to the Danvers location to receive their dose today. The interest and high demand from patients to move their appointment time and receive their dose today did create a line outside of the site. Patients who were already registered for 2/10 did not experience a line. "New operational protocols were put in place to accommodate more patients inside of the DoubleTree as well as requesting patients to remain in their cars until their new appointment time. "Curative appreciates the collaboration with the DoubleTree team and local partners to ensure that we can increase the number of individuals vaccinated each day and create a safe location for patients and staff."
