NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities have arrested the man accused of shooting and killing a mother and daughter in Norfolk last week.

27-year-old Kenyatta Ferrell Jones has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He was arrested Tuesday in Norfolk without incident, Norfolk police said.

Jones was named as a suspect in the shooting over the weekend. A reward of up to $5,000 was being offered for information that led to Jones’ arrest. Court documents reveal he turned himself in.

Police believe Jones shot 52-year-old Alicia A. Hereford and 23-year-old Morgan B. Bazemore, both of Norfolk, around midnight Thursday in the 800 block of Goff Street in a parking lot.

Officers arrived shortly after — in the early morning hours Friday — to find the two women suffering from gunshot wounds. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones appeared through video for an arraignment in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Wednesday morning.

This arraignment was for one set of the charges– one count of second-degree murder and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Those two charges being filed in JDR court reflects that Jones had some type of relationship with one of the victims.

At this time, it’s not clear whether that relationship is with the mother or daughter. The nature of the relationship has also not been released by officials.

Court officials say Jones obtained James Broccoletti as his attorney.

Jones is expected back in court on April 21 to set a preliminary hearing date.

10 On Your Side also learned from court paperwork that he has a prior criminal record dating back to 2012 for petit larceny and possession of marijuana, among other charges.

Investigators haven’t released the motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting on Goff Street.

Witnesses who spoke to 10 On Your Side said they heard about 15 gunshots at the time. A tow truck was also seen taking a vehicle away from the scene for the investigation.

A person close to the family said the two women were close, but didn’t know Jones’ relationship to them.

Jones is currently being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond.

After Jones’ arrest, Executive Director of Samaritan House Robin Gauthier issued a statement on the women’s deaths and the man’s arrest, calling Hereford “one of our own.”

“Last week, Samaritan House lost one of our own. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Alicia Hereford and her daughter Morgan Bazemore for their tragic and senseless deaths. Alicia served Samaritan House as manager of our Emergency Shelter Program in 2019.

It’s difficult to comprehend, but domestic violence is so prevalent that one of our own would fall victim to violence. In addition, statistics show that women of color are still disproportionately killed by their abusers – they are two and a half times more likely to be murdered by an abuser. This why the work everyone does at Samaritan House is so very important. We must be here for the victims that can find their way to Samaritan House.”
