AOC releases four-point plan to fix illegal immigration crisis

.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released four policy considerations to fix the illegal immigration crisis on the southern border after a volatile visit to the border earlier this week.

The New York Democrat suggested first that the Trump administration “reinstate U.S. humanitarian aid in the Northern Triangle.” She said the U.S. should treat the countries in Latin America as real partners.

“Climate change: There is broad consensus from military to activists that resource strains (droughts, famine, etc) & nat disasters are drivers of refugees,” Ocasio-Cortez said was her second policy recommendation. “People are fleeing places that were once livable &are no longer. It will get worse the longer we do nothing #GreenNewDeal.”

The freshman congresswoman also suggested that the U.S. decriminalize border crossings.

“Border policy: As @JulianCastro mentioned in the #DemDebate, it’s time to repeal Section 1325 & 1326, the statutes this admin is using to mindlessly throw people in cages,” she said. “We have to take these proceedings out of criminal code & into civil code. Torture accomplishes nothing.”

Her last policy proposal was to create public investment to create jobs for immigrants and citizens. The congresswoman did not specify whether the jobs investment would be accessible for illegal immigrants.

“Econ: We need large-scale public investment to spur job creation for citizens&immigrants alike. Ideally that investment transitions us to a sustainable economy (climate & income-wise). We are overdue to rebuild American infra&it’s going to take ALL of us & immigrants to do it,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Her policy proposals follow a visit to the southern border where she said she witnessed horrific conditions in migrant camps.

“Just left the 1st CBP facility. I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me. Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets. This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said Monday.

Witnesses at the El Paso, Texas, facility claimed the congresswoman screamed at federal law enforcement officers “in a threatening manner.”

“She comes out screaming at our agents, right at the beginning [of the tour] … Crying and screaming and yelling,” said one witness.

“The agents, they wanted to respond, but they held back because she’s a congressional delegate. But when you have someone yelling at you in a threatening manner … ” the same person said. “They were like, ‘Hey, you need to kinda step back.’”

Kellyanne Conway, the counselor to the president, said Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez was lying about the conditions in the camp.

“Chuck Schumer wants to talk about photo-ops. I saw one yesterday,” Conway said. “It’s called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going down to one of these facilities and making this outrageous claim that a woman’s drinking from a toilet that everybody who has control over that facility has said that’s not true. They’ve not heard of this.”
