Historically the Black church has been a cornerstone of Black life. Not just for religious centering, but for social activism, educational opportunity, and what it means to be a community. But, generational conflicts, from a reaction to respectability politics to challenges to the church's approach to the rights of LGBTQ+ people and patriarchal traditions have made many turn away. This week, Dr. Monique Moultrie, Reverend Stanley A. Williams, III, and Pastor Cheryl Moore will discuss the way forward for the Black Church.

Dr. Monique Moultrie is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Georgia State University. Her scholarly interests include sexual ethics, African American religions, and gender and sexuality studies. Her book Passionate and Pious: Religious Media and Black Women’s Sexuality was published by Duke University Press, and was the 2018 Book of the Year for the Religious Communication Association. Her forthcoming manuscript Hidden Histories: Faith and Black Lesbian Leadership will also be published by Duke University Press.
