John W. Schmidt

MISSION VALLEY — John W. Schmidt, 85, of Mission Valley passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023. He was born October 28, 1938 in Mission Valley to J.B. and Delphine Adickes Schmidt. He was an accomplished athlete and graduate of Cuero High School and received a full scholarship to Texas Lutheran University. He married Barbara Berger on June 7, 1964 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mission Valley. He enjoyed fishing and was almost as good a fisherman as his two sons. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Barbara; daughter, Michelle (Michael) Samford of Victoria; son, Bradley (Shannon) Schmidt of Victoria; daughter-in-law, Theresa Reid; brother-in-law, Nick Greco; grandchildren, Kacie (Travis) Balfanz, Scheri Schmidt, Ricky (Michelle) Schmidt, John Bradley Schmidt, Elizabeth (Ben) Cote, Abigail Samford, Colten Davidson, Madison Samford, Jacob Evans, Jordyn (Jonathan) Vahalik, Joshua Zatopek and Jayce Hermes; great-grandchildren, Hayden and Pryce Mireles, Easton, Keely and Paityn Balfanz, Avery and Waylon Cote along with other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey Schmidt; sister, Joyce Greco and grandson, Jaxon Hermes. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023, 1:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church - Mission Valley with a Memorial Service to begin at 2:00 PM with Pastor Jonathan Meyer officiating. Honorary Pallbearers include John Bradley Schmidt, Colten Davidson, Travis Balfanz, Joshua Zatopek, Jayce Hermes, Ben Cote, Jonathan Vahalik, Jacob Evans, Gary Berger, Lindsey Ficklen, Heath Hoefling, Josh Lee, Jeff Zengerle, Jim Greco and Christopher Eveleth.
