I-20 Texas Corridor Study

Study overview

TxDOT works to deliver a safe, reliable, and integrated transportation system. The I-20 Texas Corridor Study, conducted by TxDOT’s Freight, Trade, and Connectivity Section of the Transportation Planning and Programming Division, will identify multimodal needs and prioritize improvements that facilitate the movement of people and goods from east to west Texas. The study area spans along I-20 from the I-10 junction in Reeves County to the Texas/Louisiana state line, a distance of 635 miles. I-20 is one of the primary east-west travel routes in Texas. The corridor is used for travel, trade, and as a primary evacuation route from I-635 to the Texas/Louisiana state border in case of an emergency.

The I-20 Corridor Study is critical to maintaining both a regional and national transportation system that is safe, efficient, and responsive to future growth.

TxDOT has developed an interactive map with proposed improvements as part of the study. Comments were collected through Sunday, March 19, 2023. While the comment period has closed, you can view the comments that were collected on the interactive map. A summary report of the comments received is included as Appendix E: Project Recommendations Public Engagement Report.

Key considerations

Potential improvements to the I-20 corridor will be identified in collaboration with the stakeholders and public by analyzing multiple elements, such as:

  • Safety conditions
  • Existing infrastructure conditions
  • Congestion and capacity needs
  • Alternative routes and corridor resiliency
  • Multimodal passenger and freight options
  • Truck parking locations
  • Traffic operations and Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • Frontage road connectivity and continuity
  • Funding mechanisms and financing strategies
  • Compatibility with adjacent uses and future growth trends

Study approach

TxDOT will work with local government officials, organizations, community members and experts to identify potential future improvements, perform analyses, collect data, and create a corridor development strategy.

Stakeholder and public engagement

Public and private sector input will be a critical component of the I-20 Corridor Study. The public will be engaged through a Corridor Steering Committee and three Segment Working Groups:

  • West – I-10 to Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
  • Central – DFW Metroplex
  • East – DFW Metroplex to Texas/Louisiana State Line

The public will also have opportunities to provide input throughout the development of the study.
