Carbon GOP leader upset with Wild’s remarks

U.S. Rep. Susan Wild’s comments about Carbon County voters are sad and disappointing to its Republican Party chairman.

“I heard these comments about drinking the Trump Kool-Aid, and I’m not happy with them,” Lee Becker said Monday night. “She is supposed to be our representative.”

Wild, a Democrat, said on a Zoom call that she was “dismayed” over representing a county that backed former President Donald Trump. Carbon County voters supported Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Wild represents the 7th Congressional District, which picked up Carbon County in redistricting following the 2020 census. The county was previously held by U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, also a Democrat.

“After Trump came along, it went from a sort of working-class blue district to a - they drank the Trump Kool-Aid - and it really became a red county,” Wild said. “So, I was dismayed when I got that as part of my district. But what I have learned is since then is they were sorely neglected at the federal level under their last representative, who was a Republican.”

Wild pointed out that Carbon County was represented by Republican Dan Meuser prior to Cartwright. Wild, who has represented the 7th district since 2018, won her last re-election bid in 2022 by less than 6,000 votes.

“Susan Wild is supposed to represent the people of Carbon County, whether Democrat or Republican, or no affiliation,” Becker said. “I’m disappointed with what she said.”

Becker noted that she previously made comments about needing to school the people of Carbon County for favoring Trump.

“I’m not surprised by her comments,” Becker said. “Susan Wild is in it for Susan Wild.”

Becker noted that Wild votes with President Joe Biden, and Biden’s economic plan isn’t working for folks. He pointed to a front-page story about the increased demand on food pantries, as people struggle to pay their bills.

“Bidenomics is not working,” he said.

Tina Henninger, the Democratic Party chair in Carbon County, has a different take on Wild than her Republican counterpart, saying that the congresswoman has been very responsive to local constituents.

“I have referred several people to her Lehighton office for help with Social Security and Veterans services,” Henninger said Tuesday. “This is the first time in years that Carbon has had a representative who responds to our needs and has a local presence.

“I fully expect her and her staff to continue being responsive to our local needs and prioritize the voices of rural communities like ours at the federal level,” she said.

Following the fallout, Wild issued a statement to Fox News Digital, saying she was honored to represent the people of Carbon County.

“It’s the honor of my lifetime to represent Carbon County in Congress and am grateful for the partnership I have with my constituents there,” she said. “The first thing I did upon representing Carbon County was open an office in Lehighton so I could assist as many constituents as possible in dealing with federal agencies.

“I’ll continue to work tirelessly on their behalf,” she said.
