Honour killing shames UP: 17-year-old girl, 19-year-old ‘boyfriend’ murdered, bodies found hanging from tree

A 17-year-old girl and her 19-year-old boyfriend were allegedly killed by her relatives in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.

Bareilly: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 17-year-old girl and her 19-year-old boyfriend were allegedly murdered by her relatives in Meerganj area of Uttar Pradesh’ Bareilly district. The accused later hanged the bodies of the victims from a tree in order to pass off the crime as an incident of suicide.

On Thursday, police received information that a minor girl and a youth have committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree. A police team reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. The post-mortem report confirmed that they were murdered. Following this, an investigation was initiated.

Murder story unravels

Police discovered that the deceased teenagers, both school dropouts, belonged to the same community and wanted to tie the knot. The girl’s family, however, was against their marital union. “During investigation, we found that the girl was caught by her father when she had gone to meet her boyfriend who lived in the same village. Later the girl’s brother and three relatives also came to the spot and thrashed the couple mercilessly and strangulated them to death. Thereafter, the accused hanged the bodies to show it as suicide,” a report by The Times of India quoted a senior police officer as saying.

Subsequently, the police arrested all the accused and sent them to jail on Friday. They have been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Another incident

In another incident, a man in Gujarat's Anand district allegedly murdered his five-year-old daughter believing that she was not his child as he suspected his wife of having an extra-marital affair.  

The accused, identified as Shailesh Padhiyar, frequently argued with his wife. He suspected that the child was born out of an extramarital affair. He strangled the girl to death at a field near his house in Mujkuva village on Tuesday.
