Late Friday night, the SGA Elections Council announced Kate Preston as the next Miss Auburn on the steps of Cater Hall.

Preston, a junior in chemical engineering, won the election with 3,097 total votes, 31.70% of all votes cast.

A large and energetic crowd gathered on Cater Lawn Friday night as the winner for Miss Auburn, along with the other major and minor candidate winners were announced. Preston had a substantial group of supporters in the crowd including many members of her sorority, Chi Omega, who erupted with cheers as soon as her name was called.

“I'm just so thankful for this opportunity,” Preston said, “I don't feel deserving and I've said this a lot this week but I just like can't say thank you enough to people who have loved on me and poured into me and supported me and even when stuff's hard have been such constants.”

Preston went on to say how much she loved Auburn and expressed her desire to serve and love the campus and community. She is most excited to focus on the second part of her campaign which focuses on bridging the gap between the different generations on Auburn’s campus.

Other candidates for Miss Auburn included Nylah Bluiett, junior in apparel design, Jillian Daugherty, junior in nursing, Cameron Stephens, junior in biomedical sciences, and BB Rich, junior in public relations.

The final voting totals for Preston’s opponents were Daugherty with 2,432 votes at 24.89%, Cameron Stephens with 1,793 votes at 18.35%, B.B. Rich with 1,541 votes at 15.77%, and Nylah Bluiett with 907 at 9.28%.

After she climbed the steps to the landing, Preston shared a sweet moment with now former Miss Auburn, Anne Earthman. Both Preston and Earthman were emotional as the win sunk in.

“I keep getting really emotional today just to look at the full circle and where we've come from this time last year to this time now, and it's just so sweet,” Earthman said. “To pass this down to Kate Preston, she is just absolutely amazing. I'm so excited to see what her term will look like.”

Earthman also reflected on her time as Miss Auburn and summarized the year as “so sweet, but with every good thing it has to come to an end and I think that makes that much sweeter.”

Preston was penalized 25 votes for violating code 1008.5.8 and 1011.2 of SGA’s Election Code during her campaign which deals with libel and slander against other candidates as well as harassment against other candidates who are individuals with protected status.
