SUPERIOR — Photographer JoAnn Jardine considered working without a studio when she moved out of her last location in the Upper Lakes Foods building.
After all, camera equipment is portable, and you don’t need to have four walls to shoot images of real estate and 360-degree virtual tours of businesses around town — just some of the projects Studio One Photography takes on.
However, a Main Street Bounceback grant provided the opportunity for Jardine to set up shop in another historic building, this time at 1608 Tower Ave.
“It’s my fifth historic building in town,” Jardine said. She said she loves the quirkiness of the old buildings.
Jardine started Studio One Photography in the basement of her home in 1994, but later moved to the former Tower Building where Roth Brothers Department Store had been. When that building burned down in 1998, she was forced to look for a new home for the studio. She set up shop for the next 12 years in the Trade and Commerce Building at the corner of Hammond Avenue and Broadway Street, then moved to the second floor of the historic Old Post Office for 10 years before moving to the Upper Lakes Foods building on Banks Avenue.

Jardine said the grant provided by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation helped her remodel the building for her photography studio and offset the rent in the new location.
“The spaces are wonderful for me,” Jardine said. “The reception room, and the studio is big and it’s 360. I can just spin around and have tons of choices. I have hundreds of backgrounds because I bought out photographers as they retired.”
In more than 30 years behind the camera, Jardine has built a loyal base among clients.
“JoAnn has done all of my professional headshots in the two decades plus that I have been practicing law,” Superior attorney Jamy Johansen said. “She has always been professional, receptive to my requests, and reasonably priced. Moreover, JoAnn has always been easy to reach, approachable and accommodating. She has a knack for getting the best out of her clients in studio sessions. All one needs to do is look at her work on the walls of her studio to know she is a true pro.”
Johansen and his wife, Mary, visited the studio Wednesday, Jan. 11 for the Valentine’s special, shot with their dog, Maizy.
Jardine said professional headshots are a core of the business that also does talent headshots, senior pictures, family, pets and wedding photography. In addition, she provides real estate photos, and movie location scouting and stills.
As a Google-certified trusted independent photographer, she shoots 360-degree virtual tours of businesses and is a Catalyst Content photographer. She was credited for her work as the set photographer for work on Hulu’s “Merry Kiss Cam” and served as photographer on the set of the upcoming film, “Body Language.”
Jardine said she doesn’t do video work but would like to partner with a videographer.

The new location on Tower Avenue has given her more visibility and increased her business, Jardine said.
The studio is open by appointment only so Jardine can focus on her clients when they are in the studio.
