Beach Environmental Studies Program Students Light Up the Beach Again with Wind Power
Once again, the Boardwalk, the sand and the lawns behind oceanfront hotels and restaurants will be lit up for the season.
The BayPort Credit Union Holiday Lights at the Beach, presented by Food Lion, commences November 18,
Drive down the Boardwalk, to 24th Street and the Virginia Beach Surf and Rescue Museum where you will see a display, powered by a small wind turbine and a solar panel, put together by students enrolled in the Virginia Beach Environmental Studies Program at the Brock Center. Students are learning about the potential for renewable energy, not just to improve our climate but to be a major jobs driver in Hampton Roads. The industry is coming in part because of the 176 turbines Dominion Energy intends to construct 27 miles off our coast starting in 2024.
“Virginia Beach is setting an example for how to connect renewable energy and public education,” says Mason Lemmons, who is thrilled to be at the ground floor of that effort. Anna Oroche says Environmental Studies has opened her eyes to new career possibilities. Logan Stanton, a junior like Mason and Anna, was a mate on Rudee Tours headboats this past summer and made numerous trips out to two pilot turbines in the Atlantic. “The fishing out there is already amazing because of the reef the towers are creating,” says Logan. “It will only get better.”
"These young people are having such a great opportunity to see the future of energy production,” says Environmental Studies program director Chris Freeman. “And being able to show the public how wind and the sun can power a light display is a wonderful way to demonstrate what they are studying.”
Holiday Lights at the Beach for cars runs from 2nd to 22nd Streets on the Boardwalk from November 18-January 1. For times and tickets, visit www.beacheventsvb.com. The wind and sun powered display at the Surf and Rescue Museum at 24th Street stands just two blocks past the exit but it can be visited on foot throughout the annual exhibition.
Hermitage Elementary Students Learning thanks to Virginia Beach Education Foundation Grants
Hermitage Elementary school received a grant to design and implement a STEM lab. It has been a wonderful experience for all grades. Mrs. Julie Wheeler, General Assistant and STEM lab Coordinator set up a sign up genius for each grade to have an opportunity to visit the lab, and perform experiments. Mrs. Smith, gifted resource teacher, also designs the curriculum for the lab. This month 3rd grade learned about incline planes, while the kindergarten classes designed "Turkey Traps" in groups working together. Steuents are looking forward to seeing what other awesome STEM activities come together in the lab.

Landstown High School is Planning a Carnival of STEM
The Landstown High School Carnival of STEM is a riveting, interactive celebration of STEM created by Senior and Junior biomedical engineering students for everyone to enjoy. Through this event, students will experience engineering design processes and research studies as relatable and engaging challenges. Each booth was designed by students and masked as carnival games in order to gain scientific data on how people successfully perform, and improve upon, athletic performance.
This innovative, math and science-meet-engineering and technology project is partially funded through grant money awarded by The Virginia Beach Education Foundation and community sponsors. Students start by forming teams (seniors act as project managers and juniors as lead designers) then brainstorm ideas and build their designs with the support of educators and engineers in our community. Throughout the year, students work together to host a culminating spectacle- a STEM carnival! This year’s free carnival will take place the week of April 3, 2023, and there are prizes calling your name!
If you have questions about the year-long event and/or carnival, please contact Victoria.Sachar-Milosevich@vbschools.com or Anthony.Le@vbschools.com

Legacy Lacrosse
Legacy Lacrosse boys and girls youth lacrosse league is home-based in Virginia Beach with our main office located at the Regional Training Center building at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. We offer opportunities for players to develop at any age and with any level of experience. We host multiple first-exposure-to-lacrosse programs for ages U4-U14, year round local recreation leagues for all ages, and a club program for driven athletes who want to play at a higher level. We also offer camps and clinics throughout the year to offer additional player development opportunities.
We are very excited about lacrosse becoming a varsity sport this year! We are committed to growing this sport and contributing to the success of lacrosse in our area by creating opportunities for players to learn, grow and love the game. Just this past spring we hosted almost 40 new high school girl players during a clinic to give them a first exposure to the sport, learn fundamentals and help to prepare for their club spring season. We also hosted our inaugural 'bring-a-friend' day--a no charge, equipment-provided event for kids to try lacrosse without a commitment. We believe opportunities such as these, and offered at various age groups, are important to support the growth of this sport in Virginia Beach.
We are a kids-first organization! That being said, we ensure that those of us working with kids have the proper professional development to ensure our players are receiving quality instruction and aligned to our core mission, values and culture. We are a USA Lacrosse affiliated program and adhere to their policies and training. In addition to these certifications, and under the expert guidance of Coach Natalie, we are initiating a new program to supplement USA Lacrosse training with Legacy Lacrosse-developed player curriculum and coach training. We will leverage Natalie's years of lacrosse coaching experience and successes to coach our coaches. We believe this is another area we can contribute to the sport and development of local players.

Coastal Virginia Karate
Coastal Virginia karate is Virginia Beach’s only AAU karate dojo. Our athletes train for competitions where they will display their abilities in Okinawan Forms and Fighting.
Competition is only but one fraction of what we work towards. Through karate training, our students develop strong self-esteem, self-respect, and they learn self-defense and self-control.
We teach only one system of martial arts that covers everything from striking and grappling, as well as Okinawan tools such as Nunchaku and Tonfa. Contrary to modern beliefs, these are not weapons. These are tools designed to teach spatial awareness, timing, and balance.
Open to all Virginia Beach enrolled 8th graders, seniors and faculty. Try 2 consecutive classes free to experience our unique approach.

FREE Junior Fire Marshall Program and FREE Fire Helmets!
There has been much attention paid to Fire Prevention Week in October, and for good reason. If you consider the timing of that initiative – heading into the holiday season and colder weather – the fire risks associated with that time of year are mainly adult-focused (fireplaces, space heaters, holiday lights, candles, etc.). A springtime refresher for students prior to the summer break where they will be home alone or with siblings, possibly using the stove/oven/toaster during the day makes a lot more sense for a child audience.
There are no other resources or time commitments necessary for your teachers to engage with this (outside of the 20 minutes to view the video with their students) and it would be a great end-of-the-year activity before students go home for the summer.
To get started with the program and to order your FREE FIRE HELMETS, register here www.juniorfiremarshal.com/register.

Volunteer Tracker for Adult and Student Volunteers!
Virginia Beach City Public Schools has a new app called Volunteer Tracker for volunteer applications, signing up for volunteer opportunities and entering hours. Students can manage their volunteer hours with this app too!
Here’s how it works:
- Volunteer Liaisons and Staff create Volunteer Opportunities.
- Volunteers Complete an Online Application – Just one per volunteer, no need to complete one for each school you volunteer for and approval is instant!
- Volunteer Tracker matches volunteers to opportunities.
- Volunteers review postings and sign up to help.
- Volunteer Tracker sends you reminders about the opportunities you have selected.
- Hours are automatically recorded or if not linked to a posted opportunity, they can be entered manually.
Visit https://appgarden5.app-garden.com/VolTrackVA128.nsf To complete a volunteer application and learn what volunteer opportunities are available!

Conservation Youth Team at the Virginia Zoo
The Conservation Youth Team (CYT) program is a high school volunteer and youth development program that was created for teens who are passionate about wildlife, conservation, and helping their community. Throughout the year, CYT participants learn about conservation issues, educate zoo guests about our animals, support our Safari Camp programs, and visit local organizations to participate in service projects benefiting the community. As a member of the Conservation Youth Team, teens will develop important job and life skills, build self-confidence, and earn community service hours!
The program is structured to make their time here more robust yet flexible, and hopefully more accessible to a greater number of teens. There is no minimum GPA requirement. There are also a few scholarships available that cover the first-year fees.
