2023-24 Technology Fee--
At the start of the 2023-2024 school year, UCPS will reinstate a technology fee. Families will be responsible for paying a $30 annual technology user fee per student in grades 3 – 12. This fee includes accidental insurance coverage and will ensure that students have the most robust technology available to enhance individualized learning and resources for any necessary repairs. The technology fee will be waived for students who qualify for free lunch.
Parents will receive more information about the technology fee during the summer months and through back-to-school communication. Before next school year, we invite you to read the UCPS Technology Services Handbook and learn about valuable resources, district guidelines, use of Chromebooks, and more.
Not returning to CMS next school year?
If your student is a rising 7th or 8th grader & will not be returning to Cuthbertson Middle School for the 2023-2024 school year, please contact our Data Manager, Diane Scaduto @ diane.scaduto@ucps.k12.nc.us.
The Return of the CMS School Musical... Please consider GIVING to the CMS Drama program as we strive to return to producing MUSICAL performances each school year, under the direction of our Drama Teacher, Ms. Jamie Haney. https://give.livingtree.com/c/school-musical
Reminder for Morning Car Riders--
Our school doors open at 8:15 AM each morning through 9:05 AM. Students not through the main doors at 9:05 AM will come to the school office for a tardy pass. Arrive to school early to ensure your student is not tardy to school due to traffic in the car-rider line.
Additionally, car-riders are only to be dropped off in the front car-rider line. Please do not drop students off in the staff parking lot, bus lot, high school, access road on the side of school, etc.
Parking in the Bus Lot Afterschool--
- Please refrain from parking in the designated parking spots for the school buses.
- Parents of athletes with practices/games afterschool on the CMS fields, please refrain from parking in the bus lot (along the curb) while waiting for your child between 4-6 PM. Our bus drivers are returning from bus routes during this time and need the space to be able to back into their parking spots.
Message for parents of current 6th Grade CAVS--
North Carolina requires a booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) and initial Meningococcal C vaccine (MCV) for all 7th grade students. A copy of each child’s updated immunization record must be presented to the school nurse after these vaccinations are received in order to provide proof that the vaccines have been given. This documentation must be obtained within 30 days of the start of the 2023-24 school year for your student to be in compliance with the North Carolina Immunization Law to maintain enrollment in school.
Please submit these records to our School Nurse this school year if the vaccines have been obtained or after receiving the vaccinations. If you have questions, please contact our School Nurse, Mrs. Susan Kuykendall at susan.kuykendall@ucps.k12.nc.us.
Important ATTENDANCE Update/Reminder--
- Please note that UCPS policy allows parents to submit 5 parent sick notes when their child is absent. After the parent has submitted 5 parent sick notes, or the student has been absent for more than 5 consecutive days, the absences can be considered excessive and a doctor’s note would be required to excuse the absence.
- When your student must be absent, excuse notes are due during the grading period in which the absence occurred. We are unable to enter parent excuse notes once the grading period has closed.
- Students who have 5 or more tardies are required to serve a detention. After that detention, additional detentions will be assigned for each additional tardy. For students who have more than 8 unexcused absences will be required to serve Attendance Recovery Sessions during times designated by the school.
- Please check your child’s attendance on PowerSchool to ensure their record is accurate.
- Questions can be directed to our school's Data Manager at diane.scaduto@ucps.k12.nc.us.
CMS Athletic Director-- Mr. Justin Polley
Questions about Middle School Athletics can be directed to justin.polley@ucps.k12.nc.us.
Important Reminders from the School Office--
- When picking up your student early from school, please remember to bring a photo ID. A photo ID is required before we can release your child to you. For safety reasons, we cannot release students to anyone other than their parents/legal guardians, unless an individual is listed as an authorized person on the student's emergency card. If a person other than the parent/guardian or authorized person comes to pick up a student, we cannot release your student.
- If you will be picking up your student early for an appointment, please remember to send a note with your child that morning. Your student should take the note to the front office and they will then be provided with a 'green' early dismissal pass. This pass will allow your child to be waiting in the front office for your arrival. This helps us minimize class interruptions.
- If a parent/guardian would like to have someone other than an authorized person who is on the emergency pick-up list pick up their student, they will need to send an early dismissal note in with their student in the morning stating who will be picking up their student. We cannot accept phone calls during the day asking that someone who is not on the emergency pick-up list be allowed to pick up their student.
- If you need to add siblings, or other family/friends as people authorized to pick up your student, have your child stop in the front office to pick up a new emergency card. Please add anyone that might pick up your student in case of an emergency.
Please make sure that we have the most up-to-date contact information for you. If you have changed your email or phone number, please contact our Data Manager, Diane Scaduto diane.scaduto@ucps.k12.nc.us.
- If your child is absent from school, you don’t need to call or email the school to inform us. Please send a note when they return to school and ask your child to provide it to his/her homeroom teacher. (If there is a reason your child will be absent from school for a longer period of time, please contact our data manager, Diane Scaduto at diane.scaduto@ucps.k12.nc.us.)
PowerSchool "Parent Portal"-- The Parent Portal, which allows parents to view your child's information including attendance, grades, etc. is open.
- Parents, consider becoming a Canvas Observer to link with your child's account & have access to observe assignments, grades, etc. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hWD0Xuj6pcCXo-zjeY1HEwbGEYtHRDCz/view
Need to reload your child's breakfast/ lunch account? You can make a payment online at www.k12paymentcenter.com. (You will need your student's ID number.)

Items FORGOTTEN at home...
Reminder of this CMS school policy.
Instructional time will not be disturbed for students to obtain forgotten items. When a student leaves an item at home, we ask that they bring the item to school the next day, unless it is an item that is required for their health and safety (ex. eye glasses, medicine, lunch, water bottles, etc.). Additionally, student Chromebooks will be permitted to be dropped off, if forgotten at home, as these are important instructional tools for active student participation within classroom activities & assignments.
*Homework/projects, cell phones, instruments, PE uniform, etc., should not be brought to school for students.
**Students may not receive gift items or fast food while at school.
Fast Food PROHIBITED during student lunches...
Fast food, soft drinks, and food for birthday celebrations cannot be brought to the school for student lunches.
Student Drinks-- Please note that WATER is the only drink that should be filled inside the water bottles that come to school with students each day. Energy drinks are also not permitted.
ACCESS your child's BUS information here-- Transportation Bus app.
Parents can get the information you need from the transportation department without having to call the school... Download the app today. You will need your child's ID number to register. (For returning families, you can locate the ID# on a past report card, student schedule, or simply ask your child as it is the # used to log-in to their computer.)
The Edulog Parent Portal smartphone app helps you receive information about your child’s school bus ride. It allows you to:
- Access designated bus stop times and locations,
- See real-time information about the location of your child’s school bus, and
- Receive notifications when the bus is getting close.
*This new app replaces the "Here Comes the Bus App."

Student Attendance
Students are expected to attend school and each class every day unless sick, doctor/dentist appointment, educational opportunity, etc.
- Parents should submit written documentation in order to have their student’s absence considered “excused.” Please submit to your child's homeroom teacher within 3 days of the absence.
- CMS will only accept parent 'sick' notes during the grading period in which the absence occurred; notes from a medical provider will be accepted at any time.
- ONLY the following reasons are acceptable to consider marking an absence 'excused:' Illness, quarantine by a health provider, medical/psychological visits (with note from the provider), funeral for immediate family member (with valid documentation), military deployment activities, PRE-APPROVED educational opportunities, religious observances.
- For every 5 unexcused tardies / early dismissals, students will be required to serve a 'detention' at a time designated by CMS.
CMS Procedures for Morning Arrival & Afternoon Dismissal
Morning Arrival
- School doors open for students at 8:15 AM. (Please do NOT arrive at CMS before this time.)
- Students arriving between 8:15 AM-8:35 AM will report to the PIT.
- Arriving at 8:35 or after, students report to 3 areas by grade-level. (6th- Cafeteria, 7th- PIT, 8th- Gym).
- At 8:50 AM, students will move to their homeroom classrooms.
- Breakfast is served from 8:35 AM through 9:00 AM.
- Students are LATE if not in the school building at 9:05 AM. Plan accordingly. (Students who are late will need to report to the school office to receive a tardy pass.)
Afternoon Dismissal--
At about 4:00 PM, dismissal procedures will begin. CMS is a LARGE school; an efficient dismissal process takes some time.
- Car-riders will ONLY be picked up via the front car-rider line at the front of the school.
- Parents, please do not arrive at CMS until 3:30 or later for afternoon pick-up as the high-school is dismissing beforehand, and too many cars will cause gridlock on our school campuses.
- Parents should NOT park in the staff parking lot, visitor parking spaces, the high school, or nearby neighborhoods to pick up children at dismissal time.
- When picking up students, please pull ALL the way up to the front of the car rider line so we can load students quickly and safely. Students are to step into a car on the right side to avoid other cars.
- Walking home from school is discouraged as it is a safety concern; the school is not currently outfitted with appropriate sidewalks nor cross walks.
Change in Student Afternoon Transportation
In the event of an emergency, transportation changes will be taken over the phone and included with afternoon announcements. (We don't call the student out of class to communicate this information.)
Reminder... Students may not ride any bus to which they are not assigned.
Early Dismissal From School
Students who must leave before the end of the school day should bring a note from home requesting early dismissal. The note should be taken to the office upon arrival and exchanged for a 'dismissal slip.' At the appointed time, the student should report to the office and be signed out by an authorized adult with a picture ID. Parents should sign students out before 3:20 PM for early dismissal, in order to not interfere with the school’s dismissal procedures.
