The place where # U Matter!
Message from the Director
In this edition of the Cultural Center newsletter, we invite you to join us in celebrating Black History Month through events that honor the Literary Legacies of icons past and present. So much of our collective and individual histories are wrapped up in words and the power that they imbue. The events this month aim to take participants on a journey to reflect on where the words of our ancestors have brought us and invite us to explore where the words of our trailblazers will take us. We also invite you to think about your own words and how you will use their power to bring about change for the greater good.
In addition to sharing the events for Black History Month, I want to express gratitude and appreciation for all the collaborative effort that made King Week 2021 a reality!
And now a word from Maya Angelou,
A Pledge to Rescue Our Youth by Maya Angelou
2006
Young women, young men of color, we add our voices to the voices of your ancestors who speak to you over ancient seas and across impossible mountain tops.
Come up from the gloom of national neglect, you have already been paid for.
Come out of the shadow of irrational prejudice, you owe
no racial debt to history.
The blood of our bodies and the prayers of our souls have bought you a future
free from shame and bright beyond the telling of it.
We pledge ourselves and our resources to seek for you clean and well-furnished schools, safe and non-threatening streets, employment which makes use of your talents, but does not degrade your dignity.
You are the best we have.
You are all we have.
You are what we have become.
We pledge you our whole hearts from this day forward.

King Week 2021
King Week 2021 Recap
Thank you so much to everyone that participated in, attended and had a part in planning the King Week 2021 schedule of events. We hope that you will take some time to watch the videos below if you did not have a chance to attend, or go back and glean additional insight if you were able to attend. Dr. Fluker shared a powerful message about "plenty good room" in the keynote lecture and led a thought provoking discussion with our student leaders on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Then, on Wednesday we listened to the submissions of the winners of the Literary Response Competition as well as the insight that they along with their administrators and panelists had to share regarding the importance of education and leadership. Friday, our hearts, ears and minds were taken to melodious heights through the creative expressions of the talented featured artists who shared their gifts with us! On Saturday, January 30, 2021 volunteers aided in projects of service at the Life Enrichment Center.
