Reaching out. Giving back. Having fun.

At SFA, we believe that there’s more to the college experience than textbooks and lectures – and that’s why we encourage our students and faculty in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture to get involved with the community through unique educational programs, fun events and service projects.

Check out the list below to learn more about some of our most popular community outreach events:

BioBlitz

We partner with the National Association for Interpretation to host an annual BioBlitz in the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. SFA professors and students work with community members to find and identify local plants, animals, fungi and other organisms in the 42-acre Pineywoods Native Plant Center. The family-friendly event also includes fishing, arts and crafts projects and food.

Visit SFA Garden's Family Adventure page for more information.

Breakfast on the Farm

This award-winning event features a free pancake breakfast, plus animal displays, interactive educational stations and activities designed to educate families about East Texas agriculture and inspire the next generation of farmers. Admission to the event is free, but seats are limited!

For more information, contact Dr. Erin Brown at browneg@sfasu.edu or visit our Breakfast on the Farm page.

Lumberjack Legacy

SFA students workingThe Lumberjack Legacy Program allows landowners throughout the region to donate land to be sustainably managed by natural resource professionals for the landowner's desired outcomes while also serving as Arial shot of the Atoy propertyliving laboratories for SFA faculty, staff members, and students. Currently, the college manages more than 3,000 acres of donated forestland for a variety of designated goals including timber production, carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Revenues generated through timber sales fund scholarships for deserving students within the college. For more information on how your property can be a part of the Lumberjack Legacy, contact Jason Grogan at jgrogan@sfasu.edu.

NacogdoTREES Competition

This unique contest encourages students, faculty and community members to explore the SFA campus and the surrounding community in search of competition-worthy trees.

Through this event, we encourage you to explore the over 700 combined acres of SFA campus and City of Nacogdoches parks and share the trees that are special to you. We also invite landowners in the Nacogdoches community to share trees located on their property they believe are worthy of recognition.

The event, scheduled from October 8 - November 30, 2021 is open to SFA students, faculty, staff and the surrounding Nacogdoches community. Prizes will be awarded to submissions from each category including an SFA Gardens Plant Sale voucher, t-shirts and more!

Categories include: tallest tree, best shade tree, largest trunk circumference and more.
