Watershed Management

Précis
  • Problem: A host of challenges demand a new approach.
  • Solution: Geospatial analytics.
  • Benefit: Better way to manage your assets and reduce risk.

Has someone ever told you to get a second opinion? When I have been told that, it is usually in response to a medical condition or making a big purchase. The opportunities for earth observation are increasing greatly. When connected with science-backed analytics, an incredible tool is made available, offering a unique perspective on your assets. Is there a better way of managing your assets and reducing risk? Get a second opinion and new perspective with Satelytics.

Satelytics’ measurement algorithms are developed to provide solutions to specific business challenges faced by our industry customers. The algorithms detect and, in many cases, quantify constituents in parts per million (ppm) to parts per trillion (ppt) concentrations on land and in water and air. This capability is akin to performing spectroscopy, but instead of being done in a lab on a small sample, measurements are completed using sensors on a satellite or other imaging platform over land and water assets.

Think about these possibilities and perspectives:

  • The number one thing we hear from our watershed customers is, “how can we use geospatial analytics to identify sources of nutrient load into lakes and reservoirs?” Satelytics' home office is located on the shores of Lake Erie. Our first algorithms came out of the need to fight harmful algal blooms that have plagued the lake for years. But to really drill down on source loads, detection is not good enough. There must be quantification as well. This is what sets Satelytics apart.

  • Our nutrient load measurements include phosphorous, nitrogen, phycocyanin, chlorophyll-a, all in parts-per-billion (ppb) concentrations. With satellite-based water quality sampling, every pixel is analyzed and tied to lat/long coordinates so sources can be identified. Satelytics’ data can determine where agriculture runoff is present and where faulty septic systems exist along the shoreline. Our phosphorous and nitrogen algorithms function on land and water.
  • Additional “value-added” measurements used by Satelytics’ watershed customers include total suspended solids, relative sediment, turbidity, bathymetry, land and water temperature, sub-aquatic vegetation and speciation, hydrocarbon sheens, heavy metals, and change detections. All of Satelytics’ measurements can be completed from one set of data, which squeezes the most value from each set of imagery. Our analytics can replace traditional single-point sampling regimes with frequencies determined by the customer. For watershed customers, our analyses are often planned to accompany seasonal changes or to follow large upsets to the watershed.
