Last-Minute Campaigning Brings President Biden to New Mexico

President Joe Biden delivered remarks about his student loan debt-relief program at a stop in New Mexico Thursday, while campaigning for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Speaking at Albuquerque's Central New Mexico Community College, Biden said 26 million people already have applied for student debt relief. The program allows $10,000 to $20,000 in forgiveness, depending on the type of loan. Biden emphasized that families should have a "little breathing room left" - even after paying their bills.

"You have to make under $125,000 now to get that relief - and for borrowers out of school. nearly 90% of that relief is going to go to people who have incomes under $75,000," he said. "This is a game-changer for so many people."

Earlier this year, Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 140, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship Act, making college tuition-free for most New Mexicans and establishing a tuition-free scholarship program. The governor is running for a second term against Republican Mark Ronchetti, a former Albuquerque television meteorologist.

On Wednesday, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund released a tracking-poll update. Its chief executive, Arturo Vargas, projected significant participation in next week's midterms by Latinos, who make up 44% of all eligible voters in New Mexico - the highest share of any state.

"So, our projections for this year are that Latinos will largely mirror the turnout numbers in 2022 that we saw in 2018," he said, "meaning that one of every 10 U.S. voters is expected to be a Latino or Latina."

Hispanics are about 19% of the U.S. population or 62 million people - the largest racial and ethnic minority group in the country.
