The national and Pennsylvania average prices for a gallon of gas hit record highs today.

The national average price today is $4.36 a gallon, according to GasBuddy, and $4.37 a gallon, according to AAA.

Either way those prices broke the previous record of $4.35 a gallon, set in March of this year.

The national average price of diesel also hit a new record high at $5.53 a gallon today.

The average price in Pennsylvania today is $4.54 a gallon.

Don’t expect the situation to get better any time soon.

Prices, GasBuddy said, “could continue to climb through Memorial Day as summer road trip season begins and oil prices remain volatile.”

Fuel prices soared in March as the volatile situation with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Prices then started to decrease but are again rising “as the odds of the European Union sanctioning Russian oil increased.”

The national average price for a gallon of gas has increased 15 cents a gallon in just seven days.

“Liquid fuels have turned into liquid gold, with prices for gasoline and diesel spiraling out of control with little power to harness them as the imbalance between supply and demand globally continues to widen with each passing day. Russia’s oil increasingly remains out of the market, crimping supply while demand rebounds ahead of the summer driving season,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“There’s little, if any, good news about fuel prices heading into summer, and the problem could become worse should we see an above average hurricane season, which could knock out refinery capacity at a time we badly need it as refined product inventories continue to plummet.”

The lowest price in the Harrisburg area today, according to GasBuddy reports, is $4.29 a gallon at Sam’s Club in Swatara Twp., Costco in Lower Paxton Twp. and Speedy Track in Harrisburg.
