CNMS User Meeting recognizes students and staff

Topic:

The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory hosted a virtual user meeting August 8 – 11. The meeting brought together the center’s staff and users from across the globe for sessions on current and future directions in nanoscience research. Topics broadly addressed atomic-scale imaging and characterization, quantum materials and devices, electronic materials, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and materials for additive manufacturing. Attendees participated in a town hall discussion focused on user experiences and feedback.

As part of the meeting, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students competed for “Best Student Presentation.” Four student winners were selected and gave invited talks during the plenary session.

Holland Hysmith, University of Tennessee – “The Role of SnO2 Processing on Ionic Migration in Multi-Halide Perovskites”

Thomas Robinson, Stevens Institute of Technology – “Characterizing the Nanoscale Surface Behavior of Multifaceted Ni-Based Bimetallic Catalysts Using Density Functional Theory”

Pagnareach Tin, University of Tennessee – “Investigating Haldane Properties of a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)”

Gene Yang, University of South Carolina – “Understanding the Structure-Strain-Ion Conduction Relationships in Fluorite-Bixbyite Heterostructures”

The User Executive Committee also recognized CNMS staff Bernadeta Srijanto for the “Outstanding CNMS Staff Service Award.” She was nominated for the award by users who commented: “Bernadeta continues to be an exceptional resource for us, and we are only able to fabricate our devices to do our research with the careful process she’s developed and the tools at CNMS. Before working with Bernadeta, the group here worked for almost 4 years to try to get devices that worked, including with several contract fabrication organizations, all to no avail. Now, Bernadeta makes them regularly and is able to easily incorporate updates and improvements into the devices as we need them.”

The CNMS User Meeting takes place annually and provides a formal communications route connecting CNMS users and management. For more information, visit https://www.ornl.gov/facility/cnms.
