Well-child visit (ages 3-6) technical assistance

As of January 2020, CCOs have a new set of incentive measures, two of which are designed to support kindergarten readiness:

  • Well-child visits for 3–6-year-olds; and
  • Preventive dental visits for ages 1–5.

Recent opportunities

Well-child visit marketing assets

In 2020, the OHA Transformation Center worked with Brink Communications to create marketing assets for encouraging members to make well-child (including immunizations) and preventative dental visit appointments for their children. The materials include digital fliers, brochures, social media ads, print ads and radio scripts. All materials are available in English and Spanish.

Family-centered resources to support well-child visits

In spring 2021, the OHA Transformation Center partnered with Insight for Action to conduct an environmental scan to identify resources for parents of young children (ages 3-6) to promote their children’s wellness. This scan aligns with the OHA CCO incentive metric focused on kindergarten readiness, which emphasizes the importance of well-child visits for 3-6-year-old children in improving school readiness. Tab 2 in this workbook ("Family-Centered Resources") contains a curated list of 67 free, easily digestible and family-centered resources intended to be shared with parents and families of young children. See tab 1 for instructions for using the built-in filters to navigate the resources.

Reach Out and Read early literacy program, a proven model

  • Reach Out and Read is a national early literacy program that integrates reading aloud into pediatric care. Medical providers trained in ROR provide families with the understanding and tools to make reading part of their daily routine. The program model has been shown to further language acquisition, improve school readiness, increase the time children and their caregivers spend reading together and, most recently, improve well-child visit attendance.

Needs assessment calls

The Transformation Center hosted needs assessment calls focused on the 2020 CCO incentive metric for well-child visits (ages 3-6). Two calls were with CCO staff, and one call was with clinic staff and referring organizations. Participants shared successes, barriers, and requests for support. The calls will inform future technical assistance.
