Train derails in Biddeford with two propane tank cars overturning, officials say

Biddeford Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Duross said the incident caused a small combustible gas leak.

BIDDEFORD, Maine — Two train cars filled with liquid propane derailed and overturned in Biddeford Monday night, starting a small, combustible gas leak.

The derailment took place close to 8 p.m., according to Biddeford Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Duross. Railway representatives and the Biddeford Fire Department worked together to control and stabilize the scene.

Biddeford firefighters stabilized the situation just after 9 p.m., Lt. Andrew Stevenson with the Biddeford Fire Department said. There were no injuries and are no threats to the public.

A York County hazmat team remained on the scene overnight to monitor for any combustible gas.

Crews from the railway will work to remove the derailment.

Duross reminded the public that is illegal to trespass on railroad property and to please stay away from the area.
