DCR Summer Nights Program

Extended summer hours and programming at select locations through August 2023

The DCR Summer Nights program was launched in 2015 to provide targeted urban young people aged 13-21 in urban areas with the opportunity to join in on recreational and educational activities during evening hours. Recognizing the tremendous success of this program, and the safe, inclusive, and fun events it provides for young people, it has been significantly expanded over the past nine years as has its reach. 

This summer, DCR is partnering with 84 organizations to provide recreational programming to urban youth at approximately 120 locations statewide including Boston (Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale, Hyde Park, East Boston, South Boston), Beverly, Brockton, Cambridge, Chelsea, Fitchburg, Haverhill, Holyoke, Methuen, New Bedford, Lowell, Lawrence, Lynn, Quincy, Stoughton, Springfield, Taunton and Worcester.    

The Summer Nights Program will run through August 20, and offers activities such as basketball skills, drills and tournaments; volleyball, yoga, dance, martial arts, flag football, corn-hole, fishing, ping-pong, cardio boxing, swimming, camping, rowing, kayaking, cooking, painting, zumba, dodgeball, tennis and nature exploration. Programming also includes sessions on leadership skill building, health and wellness, poetry, academic tutoring, storytelling, animation, music, media production, and career and college readiness programs. Additionally, three providers will provide accessible and adaptive programs including theater, swimming and kayaking. The program also offers free ferry passes for Summer Nights participants and their families to the Boston Harbor Islands through Boston Harbor Now. For a full list of programming, please see below.

Boston Asian Youth Essential Service 

Boston Asian Youth Essential Service (199 Harrison Avenue, Boston), will host its Summer Nights program, Summer Fun & Adventure, from July 11-August 24, within the hours of 4-8pm, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Program locations include Chinatown Boston Children Youth and Families Center, Tufts University@Boston campus, Reggie Wong Memorial Park and others.   Activities include volleyball, basketball, arts & crafts, kick boxing, health and fitness, rock climbing, and field trips.  Activities may be cancelled or rescheduled due to weather and other circumstances. Boston Harbor Now

Boston Harbor Now is offering free ferry passes to Summer Nights participants to explore Georges Island at the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park this summer!  Visitors can enjoy a picnic, explore the fort, do a scavenger hunt, become a Junior Ranger, or stop by the visitor center to delve into history — and learn about the legend of the Lady in Black!   Information will be shared directly with Summer Nights partners on how to obtain passes.

Summer Nights at Carson Beach(William J Day Boulevard, South Boston)with BHN

Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston

Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, Dorchester Boys & Girls Clubs, and West End House Boys & Girls Clubs are partnering to offer Teen Nights this summer, a series of events that will bring together teens from across Boston and Chelsea on Friday nights in July and August. Teen Nights will engage approximately 150 teens per event in a variety of safe, fun, and engaging programs and activities, from basketball, bounce houses, and BBQ to swimming, ice breakers, raffle prizes, live DJ’s, and much more! NAACP Boston 

NAACP Boston (330 MLK Blvd. Roxbury) has opportunities for youth interested in social justice and civil rights to participate in a community based program in support of the NAACP National Convention taking place in Boston during the summer of 2023. Youth will plan and execute service projects and other activities. They will have the opportunity to create work on social media plans and community engagement activities.

The program will run Tues-Sat from 4-8 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to choose days that work for them to allow them to be able to participate in other programs or work responsibilities. Week One: Acting/Improv/Stand Up (89 South Street Boston, MA 02111); July 10-13, Monday- Thursday 9am – 3pm, hosting Access to Theater, open to youth with and without disabilities ages 14-22. Participants can explore all aspects of acting/improv by getting to know each other through ice-breakers, picking different themes, finding your own voice through self-expression and making new friends.

Week 2- Dance/Movement/ Hip hop dance /Percussion (Location: 89 South Street Boston, MA 02111) July 17-21, Monday- Friday 9am – 3pm, hosting Access to Theater, open to youth with and without disabilities ages 14-22. Participants will explore basic skills of dance and movement in a group setting, and will explore a range of street dances through hip hop. In addition, participants will learn basic percussion beats and find a way to connect with the dancers through different grooves and feel.

Week 3- Songwriting/ Poetry/Hip hop/Rap (Location: More than Words, 242 East Berkeley St. Boston, MA 02118); July 24-27, Monday- Thursday 9am – 3 pm, hosting Access to Theater, open to youth with and without disabilities ages 14-22. Participants will explore the art of original songwriting, and will learn how melodies and rhythms are incorporated and arranged in the creation of a song. Participants will also learn the art of writing short poems like a haiku or techniques for storytelling through poetry.

Week 4: Visual Arts- (Location: 89 South Street Boston, MA 02111); July 31st-August 4th, Monday- Friday 9am - 3pm : hosting Access to Theater, open to youth with and without disabilities ages 14-22. Participants will explore the creation of recycled and upcycled art projects, portrait drawing, painting, sculpture, and more.

Summer Institute – (Location: Boston Center for the Arts: 539 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02116); Week 1 – August 7 - 11: Monday – Friday 9am - 3pm Week 2 – August 14-18: Monday - Tuesday 9am - 3pm; Wednesday - Thursday - 9am- 4pm Showday Friday August 18: First show at 1pm and second show at 6 or 7pm, open to youth with and without disabilities ages 14-22. This program is a theater arts exploration full day camp. Participants will design and perform original pieces.

Dream Out Loud Creative Careers Center

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Dream Out Loud, 127 West Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford.  Serving New Bedford students who have entered or completed grades 5 – 9. Programming includes activities for personal growth and well-being through creative self-expression. Students will participate in music/songwriting workshops, in which they compose lyrics and music to original creations, and illustration/graphic design classes that cover basic intermediate-level graphic design techniques. The program runs from July 7– August 24, and by the end of the summer students will have created their own original work of art to be featured in a CD or publication to be shared at an end-of-semester Student Showcase that is open to the public.

The Summer Nights Program is an exciting and engaging initiative that offers a variety of workshops and activities for youth aged 10-20. This schedule allows participants to make the most of their summer evenings, engaging in enriching activities and fostering their interests and talents.  The program aims to provide a fun and educational summer experience for participants. One of the highlights of the program is the series of workshops focused on art, photography, fishing, and basketball. These workshops provide a platform for youth to explore their creative potential, develop new skills, and engage in recreational activities. Participants will have the opportunity to learn various art techniques, delve into the art of photography, acquire basic fishing skills, and showcase their basketball talents.
