On today’s International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating Joyce Sserunjogi Nalugya who has been a committed advocate and leader within the global deaf community for decades. As a founding member of the National Association of Parents of Deaf Children (NAPADEC) in Uganda, Joyce has been instrumental in championing the rights and well-being of deaf children and their families. She serves as an active parent representative at the Global Coalition of Parents of Children who are Deaf (GPODHH) and contributes her expertise as a member of the WHO-World Hearing Forum. Joyce is a Consultant Psychiatrist focusing on Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. Her collaboration with Deaf Child Worldwide has been deeply impactful, where through NAPADEC, she has played a pivotal role in many projects. NAPADEC's objectives include empowering deaf children in Uganda by facilitating access to essential services such as education and healthcare, while also promoting the use of sign language and fostering positive parenting skills. She has worked with over 300 parents in 13 parent support groups to effectively communicate with their deaf children and fostering a sense of happiness and inclusion within families. It’s our pleasure to showcase her exemplary contribution to the lives of deaf children on this day. #IWD #futurefemale #femaleleaders #DCW #internationalwomensday2024
