ABMC is an agency of the government of the United States of America and administers, operates and maintains 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 31 federal memorials, monuments and markers located in 17 foreign countries, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the British Dependency of Gibraltar. Three of the memorials are located within the United States. These cemeteries and memorials, most of which commemorate the service and sacrifice of Americans who served in World War I and World II, are among the most beautiful and meticulously maintained shrines in the world. The majority of positions for US citizens are for Cemetery Superintendents and Assistants, though occasionally there are positions in other fields at our headquarters in Arlington, Virginia or at our Overseas Operations Office in Paris, France. Non-citizens are hired at all of our locations outside of the United States and consist of the following types of jobs: Cemeteries - Gardeners, Masons, Mechanics, Interpretive Guides, and Administrative staff. Overseas Operations - A variety of support positions including Information Technology, Human Resources, Public Affairs, Engineering, Finance, and Administrative Support. Serving your country despite discrimination This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we remember the Akimoto brothers and their sacrifice during World War II. Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941, President Roosevelt issued an executive order which resulted in the removal and internment of over 120,000 ethnic Japanese into camps throughout the western U.S. Despite the discrimination they faced, more than 33,000 second-generation Japanese Americans, or Nisei, volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. Among them were Victor, John, and Ted Akimoto. They volunteered for military service while their family members were forced into an internment camp. From stateside training to fighting in Europe, the Akimoto brothers served proudly, hoping to help change public perception of Japanese Americans. But ultimately, not all of the brothers return after the war. Victor and John are buried next to each other in Lorraine American Cemetery in Saint-Avold, France. Each of them is a Bronze Star recipient. The ABMC honors all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who fought and died in defense of our country. This month, we honor and remember all Jewish American service members commemorated at ABMC sites. As a supply sergeant, Jewish American soldier William Sawelson typically served behind the front line. On October 26, 1918, during the battle for Grandpré, France, he heard a wounded man calling for water from a shell hole. Sawelson could have continued on with his duties, but instead he volunteered to brave heavy machine gun fire to offer the man his canteen. He was killed when he attempted to retrieve more water. For his valor and his selflessness, Sawelson posthumously received the Medal of Honor. Sawelson is one of nine Medal of Honor recipients buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, France, and one of many Jewish American service members buried and memorialized across ABMC cemeteries and memorials.
