With the unprecedented climate catastrophe in Rio Grande do Sul, the MSC Foundation has launched immediate relief efforts in collaboration with the Federal Brazilian Government and MSC. Five vital electric pulmonary ventilators have already been delivered and installed at the Hospital Nossa Senhora Da Conceição in Rio Grande do Sul State, to enhance its capacity to provide life-saving care. In March 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy devastated Pomene community schools in Mozambique. In a swift response, MSC Cruises South Africa initiated a unique fundraising effort during their cruise terminal inauguration in Durban. $20,000 was raised for the MSC Foundation aboard MSC Splendida, demonstrating our joint commitment to community impact. With local stakeholders, those funds were directed to rebuilding classrooms at Pomene Primary School and providing materials for Mushungo Primary and Secondary School. The recent opening of these new facilities received strong support from local government officials and the community. As a graduate student working with the MSC Foundation's Super Coral Programme, Jarrod Little is immersed in the intricate mechanisms of coral survival. In his latest study, Jarrod investigates the feasibility of inducing natural defense responses in juvenile corals through simulated predation. By subjecting these corals to controlled stressors in a lab environment, we aim to enhance their resilience upon outplantation onto reef ecosystems. If successful, this approach could mitigate the high mortality rates typically associated with coral outplantation efforts. By bolstering the survival of newly established corals, we conserve precious resources and strengthen the health and biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems. We are excited to share a significant milestone from our eDNA analysis in collaboration with NatureMetrics and MSC Cruises. Through rigorous research, a profound richness of marine biodiversity across MSC cruise routes has been discovered. From July to December 2023, our joint efforts have documented an impressive 4,522 species detections, among which are 17 IUCN Red List threatened species. These findings not only contribute to our deepening comprehension of marine ecosystems but also underscore the pressing importance of conservation endeavours. With insights spanning from phytoplankton to cetaceans, our research illuminates the intricate interconnectedness of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Did you know Elkhorn Coral (Acropora palmata) is a vital species for reef formation? Unfortunately, its existence is under severe threat because of pollution, warming sea temperatures, and disease. Marked as critically endangered by the IUCN and endemic endemic to the Bahamas, Florida, and the Caribbean, at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve we've intensified efforts to restore populations of this key coastal ecosystem organism. In our ocean nursery, we're nurturing nearly 100 baby fragments with the goal of replenishing genetically diverse 'genotypes' on nearby cays and islets. We’re proud to announce the MSC Foundation and MSC Group, in partnership with the international charity Mercy Ships, are building a new, state-of-the-art hospital ship which will deliver free surgery and training to thousands in Africa every year. Since our partnership with Mercy Ships launched 13 years ago, it has centred on providing logistical support and deliveries worldwide enabling Mercy Ships to focus its resources on its core mission, but the results have exceeded expectations. 32,000 patients of all ages cared for, 26,700 completed surgeries and 8,000 medical professionals and community leaders have been trained since the start of our partnership. After building Mercy Ships’ first custom-built vessel, Global Mercy, in 2022, with this new ship we wanted to go even further by providing a substantial donation that will kickstart the shipbuilding and outfitting works. This makes it the biggest project for the MSC Foundation since our establishment in 2018! We are honoured to help those in Africa who would otherwise have little or no access to medical and surgical care.
