About us
Created in 2012 with a generous grant from the National Biomedical Research Foundation to Bentley University, the Center for Integration of Science and Industry brings together faculty, students, and visiting scholars in an interdisciplinary effort to improve the efficiency of translating scientific discoveries to create public value. The Center is an environment for thought leadership that brings together interdisciplinary scholarship in fields spanning science, technology, management, finance, and public policy. This scholarship will be informed by expert workshops as well as contributions to the practices of both public and business organizations. We expect that our work will meaningfully inform the practice of translational science and promote public value in the form of enhanced personal well-being, public health, environmental quality, sustainable development, and economic and social growth.

A warm thank you to the team at the Center for the Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University for hosting my recent visit to campus. We explored the topic of innovation in biopharma and discussed the application of “The Innovation Mindset” principles to the group’s work - as well as some ideas about fostering a culture of innovation throughout the organization, a concept we explore in my upcoming Columbia University Press book, No Fear, No Failure. The Center’s mission is “to advance the translation of scientific discovery for public value”. I’m especially grateful to Fred Ledley, Center Director, for sponsoring my talk and discussions with the group. Thank you Brian Fox and Juliana Harrison, MBA for your hospitality, organizing my visit and introducing me to the Center’s post docs and undergraduate students. I look forward to our collaboration as we share insights and advance areas of mutual interest related to the real world value of life sciences innovation to the public good. I was impressed with the research underway at the Center at the capable hands of Edward W. Zhou, Paula Chaves da Silva, Payal Arya, PhD, Booma Yandava, Bruce Leicher, Michael Boss, Greg Vaughan, Leonhard Kersten, and Andrew Donovan. The Center’s legacy continues in the work of undergraduate students: Megan Forman Henry Dao Raghad Ahmed Christopher Abbatangelo Adam Tayebjee Matt Marini Debbie Quijada You can read more about the Center’s work here: The Center for Integration of Science and Industry advances the translation of scientific discoveries for public value. Focused primarily on pharmaceutical innovation, the Center conducts cross-disciplinary research combining biomedical science, medicine and analytics with management, economics and finance to inform business strategies and public policy that maximizes both social and private value. By involving undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows in highly collaborative research with Bentley faculty, Executives in Residence, and scholars from other institutions, the Center prepares graduates for impactful careers in industry, consulting, or public policy. Notable areas of research include characterization of government investments in biomedical science necessary to bring new drugs to market, the complementary roles of government and industry in pharmaceutical development, economic returns on investments in pharmaceutical innovation, and the balance between private and social value created by commercialization of new drugs. The Center’s research has been described in leading academic journals and media outlets and has been cited by the White House, congressional leaders, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the World Health Organization, the pharmaceutical industry, and patient advocacy groups in relation to NIH funding and drug pricing policy initiatives. #InnovateNow #NoFearNoFailure #Bentley

Nonprofits are leading the charge in developing drugs for diseases, which the pharmaceutical industry often overlooks. Did you know that since 1975, there has been little progress in drug development for diseases like Tuberculosis that are not common in the US and Europe but quite prevalent in Africa and Asia? Due to the lack of ROI for drugs that don't have a large market in the US or Europe, big Pharma often ignores the development and distribution of drugs that address these so-called "rare diseases" that affect millions of people. Non-profits and public-private partnerships are stepping up to fill this gap. Payal Arya, PhD from Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University talks about INET's new article exploring the role that non-profits play in addressing this critical market failure. #healthcareinnovation Read more here: https://bit.ly/3vND7bZ
