Constance Lewis Obituary

Constance "Connie" Lewis

Connie died peacefully on March 22, 2021 from complications of Multiple Myeloma. She was born on August 4, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois to Dr. Morris Feldman and Isabelle Robillard Feldman. She graduated from Foreman High School and Northwestern University. It was at Northwestern that Connie met a fellow student, Richard Lewis, who became her husband, the father of her daughters and the love of her life. Richard and Connie married shortly after her graduation in 1951. The couple moved to Schenectady, New York, where Richard joined the financial management training program at the General Electric Company. It was General Electric that brought the couple to Louisville, as well as Washington, DC, and Fairfield, Connecticut, via a series of managerial and executive positions in finance, sales, and distribution. Ultimately, Louisville became their forever home.

Connie immersed herself in Louisville life, joining bridge clubs, book clubs, the Louisville Boat Club, The Louisville Women's Club and the PEO Sisterhood. Connie and Richard were actively involved in many volunteer and philanthropic organizations in Louisville, most significantly the University of Louisville where they established an endowment fund for Latin American Studies. Connie was an accomplished painter, a voracious reader, a competitive Scrabble player and a lover of the performing arts. She will be remembered for her ready smile, her good manners and her friendly countenance. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Lewis Mortimer (Henry), of Palm Beach, Florida, a grandson, Richard Lewis Bierbaum (Laura) of New Canaan, Connecticut, a granddaughter, Caroline Bierbaum LeFrak (James) of Miami, Florida and 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, Richard, and by her daughter, Patricia Lewis Sutton.

Special thanks to the Hosperus workers for their kindness and help and to the staff of Baptist East Hospital palliative care nurses.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Louisville Symphony Orchestra would be appreciated.

Not sure what to say?

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of Connie. I painted with her and taught classes she attended with the Kentuckiana Decorative Artists. Connie was a wonderful painter and a delightful student. She was always so kind, supportive, and appreciative of her teachers and fellow students. She will be missed by all of us who considered her a dear friend. Such a lovely lady!

We are so saddened to learn of the loss of Connie. She had been a much loved member of Kentuckiana Decorative Artists for many years. In addition to being a wonderful painter, she was a wonderful and kind person. Connie always had a smile for everyone at our meetings. Although we have not been able to meet for over a year now for safety reasons, Connie will be missed and remembered by us all. Prayers for her family.

My heart goes out to you. Connie and I talked weekly and played scrabble. I have left messages and have been so concerned. She was such a dear and wonderful friend and will be sorely missed. My prayers are with you.

Connie was one of my mother's best friends. I would get this photo out and look at this beautiful couple, just knowing it was true love. I always remember them as a strong constant in my parent's life.

My husband Bob Buchanan and I are so saddened by the loss of our dear friend Connie. She and her husband Richard are the generous benefactors of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program at the University of Louisville and have provided scholarships for more than 200 UofL students to study abroad in Latin America and Spain as Lewis Scholars. She is now with her beloved husband Richard, whom we lost last year. I always used to refer to the two of them as "the love birds," and now they are together again for eternity. Connie and Richard loved to attend our Annual LALS Spring Showcase every April and meet the students who studied abroad as Lewis Scholars. They also loved reading the Lewis Scholar Reports, in which the students would invariably say that their experience abroad changed their lives. I know their legacy will live through the students whose lives they have touched. Connie loved dogs and she enjoyed the visits we would make to Treyton Oak Towers with our labrador Jake, the LALS Therapy Dog. I´m posting the last photo I took of Connie with Jake, and one of Connie and Jake at our LALS Spring Showcase a few years ago. Rest in peace dearest Connie. We will miss you. Love, Rhonda Buchanan, LALS Director
