People in the Quindaro neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, will protest next week to ask the Unified Government of Wyandotte County to reopen the popular Parkwood pool.The pool will remain closed in 2021 due to a shortage of lifeguards and other key staff.David Grigsby owns the Parkwood barbershop across the street from the pool.Grigsby is organizing the protest Friday, June 18 at noon at the pool asking public leaders to reconsider their decision."If they're not going to swim this year, what are they going to do?" he said.Unified Government leaders say they have struggled to find lifeguards. A recent push to find lifeguards through a work-study program only had one applicant."2020, losing that year of aquatics, I know didn't just hurt us but it hurt a lot of the metro area aquatics," said Angel Obert, assistant parks director for the Unified Government. Obert said she hopes the labor shortage will normalize for 2022.The discussion around the pool comes a week as a 13-year-old boy remains in critical condition after nearly drowning at the Parkwood pool last Saturday. Authorities said the boy and a group of friends jumped the fence at the pool to get in.The parks department filled the pool this year to work perform maintenance after it did not open last year due to the pandemic.Obert said the department is currently working on a timeline for how long the pool will remain filled.
