Pre-Law, Service, Citizenship and Justice Living-Learning Community
Making a difference as a legal professional and community leader is not something that can be done alone. Neither is learning to create a professional identity that values public service and responsible citizenship in the political community. With mentoring, supervision, and a structured curriculum created by pre-law advisors, students build life-long connections in a community cohort that features learning how to prepare for law school or a law-related career through guest lecture series, pre-law workshops, public service projects, internships, and professional networks with civic groups, governments, scholars, law-related organizations, clubs and teams (including Mock Trial and the Pre-law Club) around campus and the surrounding community. The Pre-Law, Service, Citizenship and Justice Living-Learning Community,
located in Centennial Court A/B, is open to all majors and minors across the Kent State University campus who have an interest in law and creating a just society.
Mission Statement
The Pre-Law, Service, Citizenship and Justice Living-Learning Community is designed to foster collaborative experiential learning in a collegial academic environment that values public service and responsible citizenship in a legal and political community committed to achieving justice for all.
Goals:
Students participating in the Pre-Law, Service, Citizenship and Justice Living-Learning Community will:
- Develop the requisite skill set to launch careers in legal or alternative legal careers in the public and private sectors.
- Live and learn in a collegial academic space with other students who have a shared common purpose to develop leadership skills and a professional identity based in law, ethics, civility, and public service.
- Create lifelong friendships, faculty mentoring relationships, and professional networks with lawyers, judges, and legal stakeholders on the Kent State campus and local, state, or national communities.
Benefits:
Students who live in and experience the Pre-Law, Service, Citizenship and Justice Living-Learning Community will be better prepared to enter law school and/or legal or alternative legal careers because they will develop close working relationships with pre-law advisors and faculty who are actively involved in teaching law-related courses, advising the Mock Trial Team, Pre-Law Club and Phi Alpha Delta organizations, and supervising internships and public service projects within the campus and/or local, state and national legal communities.
