The increased frequency and severity of droughts across Europe, the Arab region, and the Horn of Africa illustrate that climate and water are inextricably linked. This World Water Week, we must consider how to mainstream water into climate policy in the run-up to COP27. To reflect on this crucial moment, the Knowledge, Evidence and Learning for Development (K4D) programme partnered with Chatham House to bring water experts Carol Chouchani Cherfane and Sareen Malik together to discuss the challenges and opportunities.

Overview
In this special episode of Chatham House’s The Climate Briefing podcast, facilitated by Antony, speakers provide a background of water security, and its intersection with the current climate crisis. Carol and Sareen also provide their regional expertise from working both on-the-ground and in policy forums in the Arab region and Eastern Africa respectively.
Recent policy developments, such as the Glasgow Declaration for Fair Water Footprints which was signed at COP26, are also discussed. The overall message from the conversation is clear: water security needs to be seen as both a key contributor and consequence of climate solutions. As well as this, equity across regions, geographies, and scales needs to be attained in both policy and programming.
This episode forms part of K4D’s Learning Journey on Water Security. K4D supports the use of evidence and learning to improve the impact of development policy and programming for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), other UK government departments, partners and the general public. Water security has been a key theme of the capacity-building learning journeys facilitated by K4D. Over the past two years, K4D has engaged with various experts to produce outputs related to water security – including briefing packs, infographics and explainer videos – which are publicly available.
