Executive Summer-y ☀️

  • Bargain hunting, not budget cutting - Travelers are becoming more budget savvy, showing an increased appetite for travel deals and paying extra close attention on where they choose to spend their money.
  • Recharging with relaxing retreats - Visiting familiar destinations, sights, and activities are on many traveler’s itineraries this year. More are choosing relaxing wellness vacations over exciting adventures, and hidden gems over iconic destinations.
  • Exploring eco-friendly options - More are paying attention to the environment and social impact of their travels, but many are still uncertain of how to make the jump to traveling more sustainably.
  • Film-spiration across the ages - Regardless of traveler age, blockbuster films and television series are inspiring summer travelers to visit the incredible sets and destinations they’ve seen on screen.
  • Return of vacation 'Vorfreude' - After three years of planning uncertainty brought about by travel restrictions and cancellations, travelers are once again embracing vacation ‘Vorfreude’—joyful anticipation and excitement for trip planning.
Vorfreude: (noun, /ˈfoːɐfrɔydə/) a German word with no direct English equivalent, denoting a strong sense of joyful anticipation, pronounced similar to 'four-froy-duh'

Trend #1: Bargain Hunting, Not Budget Cutting

With inflation and high fuel prices on many people's minds, more travelers are looking to get savvy with their budgets this summer. According to HomeToGo's survey, 9 in 10 U.S. travelers expressed an increased desire to find discounts and travel deals for this summer compared to previous years. However, people are not giving up on their travel dreams—92% of U.S. travelers see travel as a worthwhile expenditure this summer, and 85% already starting planning at least one trip.

Trend #3: Exploring Eco-Friendly Options

Beyond taking care of their wallets and wellbeing, many U.S. travelers are also paying mind to the eco-impact of their trips.

78% of respondents stated that they feel it is important to travel more sustainably, with 34% reporting that they're already taking action to make their vacations this summer more eco-friendly. Moreover, nearly three-quarters of respondents (73%) indicated that the eco-friendliness of an accommodation offer factors into their booking decision, with more than two-thirds (64%) willing to pay a premium for a more sustainable option.

Trend #4: Film-spiration Across the Ages

Age can have a big impact on where travelers get their ideas and inspiration for new places to explore. These generational differences become very apparent when it comes to social media platforms like Instagram and Tiktok. When HomeToGo asked U.S. travelers about their sources of travel inspiration, Gen Z and Millennial travelers were more than twice as likely to use Instagram and TikTok compared to Baby Boomers and Gen X travelers and less likely to find inspiration through word of mouth recommendations.

Despite these generational differences, nearly half of all U.S. travelers surveyed (49%) said they receive travel inspiration from film & television, which should come as no surprise following a blockbuster year for cinema and film-lovers.

Trend #5: Return of Vacation 'Vorfreude'

Many German words have carried over into common English vocabulary because of their ability to capture specific feelings or everyday situations. For example, 'Zeitgeist' which means the spirit of an era or 'Wanderlust' is the desire to travel and explore.

After enduring several summers of cancellations, restrictions, and missed flights, travelers are once again experiencing vacation 'Vorfreude'—joyful anticipation and excitement for planning trips. With a renewed sense of confidence for travel, more than one-third (38%) of Americans have already planned three or more trips this summer.
