Job Description

The City of Port Arthur (pop. 55,724), located along the Gulf of Mexico, is seeking a Controller. Port Arthur offers its residents and visitors an inviting lifestyle with a “small-town feel,” close to the attractions and amenities of a major urban center with culture, recreation, shopping, and dining for almost any taste.

Reporting to the City’s Finance Director, the Controller supports financial operations of the organization, focusing on select city financial auditing affairs, accounts payable and receivable, general accounting, financial reporting, and grants management. The Controller supervises seven employees and serves as a point of contact for external auditors, and federal and state agency auditors in the examination of the city’s financial records.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $101,900 - $128,000. The City of Port Arthur offers a comprehensive, market competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life and supplemental life insurance, ten vacation days per year, 120 hours of sick leave per year, voluntary deferred compensation, twelve Holidays, Flexible Spending Account, Tuition Reimbursement, and membership in the Texas Municipal Retirement System.  Relocation assistance may be available.


Desired Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or a closely related field, along with a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in accounting and financial work, including two years of administrative and personnel management responsibilities, preferably at a city or other governmental entity. Candidates may distinguish themselves with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification.
