Thank you Sarah!! This was AMAZING!

5 twisted stars for a delightfully engaging tale!

fan art by The Magic Book Corner

Allie Hunter is the girl that no one sees. Or better said, they see and avoid. Not only because her twin sister Hulanna outshines her everywhere. Allie's prickly nature, combined with a hawk nose, too bright red hair, sharp features and a less than perfect figure make for the perfect combination for people to avoid.

Until Hulanna steps through a magic circle into the Faerie realm and opens the door to deadly fae, bent on causing havoc and harm to Allie's village. And that makes everyone take note of Allie.

Now she is not only seen as even more pathetic than before, because she had been rendered blind on the day her sister disappeared; but she is also accused of being the root cause for the troubles now plaguing her village. It is her fault the fae have come. It is her fault they harm the village.

But Allie is not so helpless as it seems. Because even though her normal sight is gone, she can now see the spirit world. Determined to convince everyone she is not as useless as they believe her to be, Allie sets forth on a hunt for a secret artifact hidden long ago by her mother's ancestors. Three of them to be more exact. Three things to help people drive back the fae. And despite her blindeness she finds one, discovering at the same time a way to sort of see again. But her search has disastrous consequences for the village and Allie must confront the rage of her whole town.

Will she back down now and bow to the wishes of those who call her changeling and blame her for her very existence?
"No."And my words were iron. The iron of a hunter on her homeland.
"No." Harder iron. The iron of being one with the bones of the land.

Allie hardens her heart and lets anger fuel her. She follows her father's advice and lets fear burn inside her until it makes her strong and fiery. And she is determined to help her people even if they refuse to be helped. Because she is the village Hunter. And that is her duty.

After trapping Scouvrel the fae, with the help of the artifact she had found, Allie starts on a journey that can either save her people or doom every single one of them. Shunned and going against the wishes of almost everyone around her, she relies only on the wisdom of nursery rhymes and faerie stories and on a few bargains with her captive fae. If that is enough for her to succeed, that will be left for you to see. I will tell you this though. Her journey is enthralling.

In an easy to follow narrative with a fabulous wordbuilding, this fast-paced tale is one of the most captivating I have ever read. I loved Allie as a character and rooted for her from the very first page. And the way her inner struggles are portrayed, her fears, her anger and disappointment, as well as that longing for acceptance... masterfully done.

The fae themselves are delightfully twisted and spellbinding. I love the way the author wrote them. And the Allie - Scouvrel interaction... FABULOUS!

This little tale grabbed me from the very first page and I couldn't set it down till I reached the end. And now I'm eagerly waiting for the sequel. Especially after that end! It's a huge cliffhanger people - that will have you itching for more.

Adventure, angst and action - Fae Hunter delivers on all counts.
Dark, twisted and yet so very beautiful; violent and deadly but also full of gentleness and enchanting; Fae Hunter is a must read for fans of all things Faerie!

4.5 stars ~

I NEED MORE OF THIS WORLD. *Is dying*

Honestly I have shocked myself by loving this book so much. I don't really like Fae.....they're deceptive and full of magic. I thought I'd give this one a try because I got it for free (and THAT COVER HAD ME GASPING) ... *shrugs* Once I started reading I couldn't seem to put it down. I connected with the MC almost immediately....her motive and determination match my own.

The World Building and Legends also really hooked me. I love a good Fantasy story with lore and mystical tales!! Everything about this book pulsed beautiful fantasy. While the first book in a series always has ground work (less action because the world must be explained) I found this to be completely exciting.

Setting ~ Rolling hills and country side!! A village and mountains...the Fae world. It all added to the suspense and wonder of this adventure . . . . especially because Allie is basically blind.

Description ~ Obviously Sarah K. L. Wilson knows what she's doing. The details weren't overflowing and taking up too much space, they held the perfect amount of color and life. It whisked you along while painting a perfect picture of Faerieland and Allie's country!!!! 😍

Plot ~ Allie is the huntress for her village. It's her job to hunt the prey and the predators. I was squealing a lot because I just love reading about characters like her...and the Faeries created the perfect amount of suspense and action. Most of the dialogue gave me chills (which is a good thing....that means I'm feeling for the people and situation) and I still requote some of it to myself! 😂😂

Romance ~ There's kissing and some slightly awkward moments of desire, but nothing super messed up. I don't know if the relationship between the Fae and Allie will continue to grow through the series, but they were enemies throughout the whole book.

Content ~ About four maybe five kisses. The seductive-ness of the Faeries is kinda bothersome, but that goes with their deceptive character. I like how they were portrayed as evil....with all those dark layers making up their character.

Characters ~ They were intriguing and stayed true to their personality. I appreciated their flaws and differences. I couldn't help but be immersed in this adventure because of the characters and world building. I laughed and screamed...creepy and humorous. Their antics and motives were relatable.

Allie ~ The only character worth mentioning because SHE WAS AMAZING (all the others were pretty great, but I related to her the most). Her blindness to the real world and openness to the spirit (Fae) realm gave the whole adventure a neat perspective. It also caused trouble...haha...but what's an adventure without suspense? Her raging emotions were realistic, and I love how she convinced herself to be strong for everyone else. How she was selfless and yet angry. 💖

Overall ~ I really enjoyed the world building and Allie's character arc!! I'm really excited about the sequel!!

**Side Note** AND THAT STUPID ENDING MADE ME MAD!!!! I hate Fae because of this.. .. ..

**FTC DISCLOSURE** I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are mine, and mine alone. I'd appreciate it if you didn't take my opinion personally. Thanks! :)

When I first started reading this I was very intrigued. A girl trying to find her twin sister and dad after she had been recently blinded. I don't know what happened but along the line it just stopped being as interesting as it had started. I know this is YA and the book is about a teenage girl but I got tired of her getting upset at Olen just because he wanted someone else, it wasn't excessive but it got on my nerves nonetheless.

After a pretty slow start, this finally grabbed my interest with a third left to go.

In a medievally time, fae are a myth and families provide their communities with unique services (hunting, chanting, healing, etc.). Twin sisters Hulanna and Alastra enter a forbidden circle of stones to "call forth" Hulanna's destined mate, never believing it would really work. Hulanna disappears into the faewold and Allie runs for her life from the 3 fae chasing her home.

Calamity ensues. The village is menaced. Other people start disappearing or winding up dead. Allie is blamed for everything.

The Tangled Fae series is written by the same author as my beloved Bluebeard's Secret. Looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed my last Sarah K L Wilson read so much that I decided to jump into this series. This very short novel is just the first part of a much bigger story, and feels like it: despite the rather deceptively quiet beginning, the book improves throughout before ending on a fabulous cliffhanger. Comparisons to Holly Black's THE CRUEL PRINCE seem apt: this version of Faerie is similarly terrifying and cruel, and the uneasy relationship between our determined heroine and the fae she has trapped in her magical cage is well worth the price of admission. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

After Allie and her sister open a Faerie circle and her sister is stolen away, Allie is determined to get her back. Her encounter gives her the second sight - she’s blind to our world but can see the trails of the Fae. With the help of an artifact from her grandmothers, she captures a fae attempts to use him to get her sister back. Even though the fae cannot lie, they can deceive, and Allie isn’t sure if she can trust anyone.

Oh this book is good y’all. I read one and two back to back so I don’t want to give away too much plot and spoil it.

But if you like devious fae that can’t lie, a heroine in way over her head but still managing to hold her own, and trying to figure out everyone’s allegiance - you’ll love this book.

I’d recommend for fans of the enemies romance in the cruel prince, or the setting of the fae in an enchantment of Ravens.

And it’s free in kindle unlimited.

3.25 stars // read September 2021 (psst, this book is currently free!)

The following review is fairly critical- fans of dark fantasy who are willing to commit to a series might really enjoy Fae Hunter; personally I had a lot of mixed feelings.

First, the characters. Fae Hunter features an interesting array, but unfortunately, all of the characters seem to devolve as the story goes on. Allie changes from a down-to-earth young Hunter (“blindness is only a situation, not a sentence”) to a bitter and vengeful young woman at story’s end. I was especially disappointed with a certain Chanter- his actions seemed inconsistent. Is he the man Allie sees with her second sight? Is he a coward who does whatever others tell him to? Scrouvel is the most consistent; the most positive thing that he does- -is essentially for his own benefit. The only redeeming thing about him is that his glamour is smokin’ hot. That does not count for very much in my book. XD

Speaking of which, the cover is great from a purely artistic perspective, but please, someone get the poor girl a better shirt. She’s going to freeze to death given the cold climate in the book.

I did like the magic system- the whole second sight and magical scarf thing was super fascinating, as was also the concept of Chanters and the cage. Also, the tricksiness of the Fae was portrayed very well; they can find a loophole in anything- basically the supernatural equivalent of lawyers.

If you liked Fae Hunter, I would recommend checking out A Branch of Silver, a Branch of Gold by Anne Elisabeth Stengl- there’s some similarities between the sister situations. Sylvia Mercedes might also be a good one to check out too.

This book isn’t a stand alone; it feels like a prequel in some respects as it’s really just setting up for future installments. There’s a cliffhanger at the end, and there’s also some very intriguing hints at developments later in the series (for example, the flashback of Hulanna trading the bunnies), so I might continue the series at some point if it goes on sale or if I get KU.

Content:
Violence: Low/Medium. Mentions of someone being gored, dismemberment, etc., nothing is detailed.
Language: None.
Sensuality: Medium/High. Quite a few suggestive comments; physical attraction; a woman goes swimming wearing the essentials and a guy makes snide comments. Nothing above PG-13 level, but still present.

Deliciously dark yet witty, Sarah Wilson has created a vivid new world of devious Fae and the human girl desperate to stop them to get her sister back. I joined a promotional tour on Instagram and received a free copy of the book.

This book has many elements that wooed me in even before reading it: a gorgeous cover, fae, romance and it was compared to The Cruel Prince. If you like those elements as well, chances are you will enjoy Fae Hunter. It was a fun read, and though the pacing was a bit slow in the beginning, it picked up after the first fifty or so pages. The deceiving and manipulative aspects of the fae made the story extremely lively and interesting, and though I loved what we got to see of them, I also wish we could have gotten to see more. In fact, the majority of the story is set in Allie’s very human village, and though the characters and their roles were quite stereotypical, the author still presented a wide array of different personalities and dynamics that made the story and setting believable.

My favorite parts were the interactions between Allie and one of the fae, Scouvrel. I will be honest, though the book is promoted as a ‘fantasy romance’, there was not much romance to be found. However, the snarky, sassy dynamic between these two was very entertaining, and it could pave the way for a future ‘hate-to-love’ relationship, that always tend to be my favorites!

Even so, there were a few aspects of Fae Hunter that didn’t quite sit well with me.
The first has to do with the writing. While I found it enjoyable, sometimes it felt too colloquial and oscillated between eloquence and simplicity, which made it feel inconsistent. I also did not appreciate the constant, repetitive emphasis on the beauty and perfection of the fae—especially in the first part of the book.
My other issue has more to do with content. Allie loses her sight very early on in the book—as is hinted in the synopsis—and I was very interested in learning more about Allie’s ‘second sight’, which allows her to see auras in the spirit world while being completely blind to the world around her. Unfortunately, this book is a victim to one of my most dreaded fantasy tropes when it comes to dealing with disability, and Allie’s blindness felt like a convenient plot device rather than a deliberate attempt at representation.

Overall, this was a good start to a series, and I’m curious to see where the story goes from here!

DNFed it at 50%. I couldn’t keep reading this. I feel like I read a book completely different from what everyone who rated it 5 stars did. It was boring, cringy and didn’t make sense. There was a lot of lacking in details and development during scenes. The characters were horrible and had no personality. I just couldn’t push myself through this. I was expecting so much and I was completely disappointed.

This book was an unexpected delight! Full of twisty Fae and one determined girl who only wants to save her village and her sister from Fae she accidentally helped release into the world.

This whole series is an audiobook, and the narrator (Caitlyn Kelly) is one of my favorites! I'm so glad I was able to binge-listen to the first three books. I've been told the next two are coming onto audiobook shortly, and I can't wait!

WHO WRITES LIKE THAT IM LOSING MY MIND

ok im reading at the speed of light for allie and scourvel and who's doing it like them?? no one....... no tropes fit them, they're so twisty and turny i want to scream. im on book 4 and they aren't even officially 'together ', which is a ridiculous notion, they simply aren't and can never be a normal couple, not when scouvrel's determined to kill her 😂 while saying things like

Let me be very clear, Knave,” I said. “Killing me – for any reason at all – is not welcome.”
“Let me be very clear, Nightmare,” he said with a teasing smirk. “Your death would hollow me, empty me, destroy whatever flickering ember of a soul I ever had and doom me to eternal torment.”

lets say hes a little insane..

“If I lift my veil to show you the machinations of my mind, I fear you will tumble with me into the abyss,” Scouvrel whispered, his eyes haunted and a little mad.

this review is a mix of the first four books which are excellent. i cannot forget to mention the top notch foreshadowing. THEIR MARRIAGE?? the fact i had go, open the previous books to confirm my memory bc i was like hold up this Did happen... IDK READ THIS SERIES‼️

scourvel is obsessive and dramatic as hell (not his real name but a nickname given by allie. a theme im sensing with this author. i like it! when allie discovers his name and says it and he- GO READ IT) meanwhile allie's mechanical and all logical, focused on saving her family and the world. shes so confused and gobsmacked by scouvrel, he'll say something uncalled for and shocking and allie is like "i.... anyway" and moves on 😭

the writing is a mix of flowery and punchy, fast paced goodness. perfect for me. I've found a new favourite!

Sooooo cute!!! I put this off FOR NO REASON I’M SO MAD! I loved this, it was so easy to read through, a quick and fast-paced read! I highly recommend this, it’s romance but major slow burn with the fantasy elements yasss. Also, it’s enemies to lovers, and it’s so well done (they aren’t even close to true lovers yet) and the banter is hilarious

–Quotes–

His smile was both angelic and darkly sinful. It made my young heart flutter like a jar of butterflies.
I was starting to suspect that what I could “see” was another plane. A spiritual realm instead of a physical one.

My heart felt deadly cold.
And then, as if the very world felt my same icy pain, snow began to fall softly over our town. Snow in the heat of harvest.
I didn’t even have enough warmth left in me to feel surprised.

I stiffened my spine instead and burned off that... whatever that emotion was... feeding into my fire within.

“Truth or Lie,” Scouvrel asked from the darkness. “You’re in love with that human boy.”
“Lie,” I hissed. But my answer was the real lie.

“Truth or lie,” Scouvrel said. “It’s the loveliest thing you’ve ever seen.”
“Lie,” I said. The loveliest thing I’d ever seen was him, but I’d never admit to that.

“Be careful, Little Hunter,” Souvrel whispered. “You’re beginning to look like a Faerie with that expression on your face.”

I really wanted to like this more than I did. But when the description says it is “trope-filled”, well, it wasn’t kidding. Faerie who love a good game, bargain, and are bloodthirsty, and magical creatures who cause nothing but havoc on the human world. Add in a determined 17-year-old heroine determined to right what went wrong , is clearly in over her head and must quickly learn the rules of the game if she is to best all of Fae kind, and you have a pretty accurate idea of what to expect.
There were, however, a few things that did stand out for me, and were a breath of fresh air in the tropes. Namely, the aspect of Allie Hunter’s sight loss and gain – to see the spirit/Fae world in her own – and how gender played a lesser role to family heritage in who would take over the necessary roles in the village she lives in. Allie Hunter is the daughter of the village Hunter and his wife Goodie Hunter, and has a twin sister named Hulanna. Yet in this estrogen-heavy family, there is no doubt that Allie wants to be and will be the next village Hunter after her father, not any prospective husband for her.
The setting is a pretty standard generic fantasy world. It also sets the scene for who Allie is, including short flashbacks to bits of her history which have direct correlations with events currently going on and clues as to the why behind them. The Knights of Light are one of the most intriguing additions to this world, by name and hinted role alone, though they don’t make any appearance in this one. It wasn’t until the last quarter or so, when Allie really starts talking with Scouvrel, that I started to get some real interest in where things were going. Fae games and bargains are dangerous things, and much more intriguing than small town mob mentality and ostracism from willful misunderstanding and ignorance. Once the games and bargains started, it did get my attention much better – but then, that was only in the last quarter to one-third of the story.
This book really should have only taken me two days to read, if that, but because of the above reasons, it took me longer – I found myself not super eager to pick it up, and when I did pick it up, I had to consciously not start skimming through as quickly as I could to just finish it. I don’t know, maybe it’s a case of the wrong book at the wrong time, and that’s why I was rather indifferent to it. Or maybe I wanted something else out of this, something it was not meant to give, and that’s why I’m left less than lukewarm about it.

I received a free eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. This has not affected my opinion or review of the book in any way.

Twin sisters went to the stone to dance. One to fulfill a childhood dream and one to live out a nightmare.

Hulanna convinced her sister Allie to dance with her at the stones hoping to open the portal to the fairies. Once they did, Hulanna willingly left a Shining One. Another came after and chased Allie trying to catch her. During the chase, Allie gets knocked out.

When she wakes up she can no longer see the world like she used to. Hulanna is gone. Her father a Hunter has to find her and the other suddenly missing items in the village. As a Hunter herself, Allie wants to go with him, but her blindness makes her a hindrance.

When she follows a trail that only she can see catastrophe abounds changing the lives of everyone in the village. Pitting family member against family member. The town against Allie. Friends become enemies.

And a blind mortal girl becomes the Fae Hunter.

I really enjoyed this adventure. Fae Hunter (B07XLPZTFR, 2019) is the first book in the “Tangled Fae” series by Sarah K.L. Wilson. Wilson puts us in the action immediately and fills us in on the back story along the way. She constantly keeps us going from one disaster or misadventure to another. There is always something going on for Allie.

It is almost like there are no commercial breaks, so you cannot put down the book because you might miss something. The story is a quick read. Wilson breaks it down into two books so you do get that intermission break (laugh). There is plenty of high stakes drama, folklore, and gruesome details to sink your teeth into.

The story takes twists and turns I did not see coming and others you kind of guess will come, but then they come with a really big twist that you do not see coming (laugh). Fun. This book is a good time. I look forward to more “tangled” fun in the future! ✶✶✶✶

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Fae Hunter (Tangled Fae Book 1) by Sarah K.L. Wilson

ARC provided by XpressoTours and Sarah K.L. Wilson. All opinions are mine and freely given.

Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook

"When the barriers were weak, they came in. They were smoke and mirrors. They were dust and mist. They stole into our minds as smoke under a door. They slid through our thoughts as oil in water. We welcomed them. We wanted them. We were them.
- Tales of the Faewald"

03-11: 'Fae Hunter (Tangled Fae #1)' by Sarah K.L. Wilson was a really nice surprise. After a sea of reads last month that were often less than stellar, authors like her have really improved my outlook going into March.

The story is about a girl trained to be a hunter, named Allie and the twin she loses to the 'Star Stones.' Basically, the stones are a take on the faerie circles of lore and in the event where her sister is lost, the main character also loses her sight.

"It was the eyes. It was those dark, magnificent eyes that seemed to see all your secrets at once. They dreamed the dreams of devils and angels, suggesting that rays of sunshine could kiss the shadows and create something utterly new."

With the fae sneaking into town and beginning to take anything they want, bit by bit, Allie struggles to find a way to stop them while the townsfolk blame her for the danger they're in to begin with.

What really caught me off guard in this story is how likable I find the young huntress. Like any solid character she wrestles with blame (both internal and external), self-doubt, and personal setbacks. She's young and sometimes she wants to give up, but she's never whiny about it.. and whining is something I can't stand in an MC.

She has few supporters in town. Hulanna, her sister, was the pretty, popular one. She's the plain one, which of course is a pretty typical trope.. but she's also the pragmatic one. She's the type who just shoves down what's getting to her and pushes on.. and you can't help but root for her.

"You're the thorns, Hunter. I'm light as a feather"
I rolled my eyes to his laughter. "This is funny to you."
"Like you wouldn't believe." His eyes widened innocently, and his smile became angelic.

Enter in the evil, yet amusing.. fae protagonist who tells Allie to call him 'Scouvrel.' His visage slipping back and forth between the usual beautiful fae appearance and something rotten and broken, I'm actually still uncertain which is true. I don't know if one represents who he really is and one his image, or if it's as simple as the glamor vs actual appearance. But he's intriguing.. and even though you know better.. you can't help but feel drawn to him and his wicked mouth.

There are many betrayals here and there throughout the story, both big and small. Also, there are lots of actions being taken that cause more issues by people who could have avoided them with just a little patience or faith in others. I found some brief, albeit unexpected brutality coupled with moments of beautiful imagery.

"Truth or lie?" I asked grumpily as I packed up my flint and knife. "You are cold without your shirt on in this icy wind."
"Lie." His tone was playful. "Only my heart is cold."

Definitely give this title a try. It's a really fun bit of dark fantasy and I'm pretty certain there's more to Scouvrel we haven't discovered yet. I suspect he's glamored me a bit.. because I'm determined to find out.. and that means I'll be off looking for the next book too, 'Fae Captive,' in hopes I can find the answers I seek.

Had some cool concepts but was ultimately shallow character wise, world wise, and plot wise. The more they added the worse it got somehow? Like I know it was supposed to sound cool and interesting but it just sounded like a bunch of cool sounding things with not a lot of substance. There was no explanation for why things were the way they were they just...were, and you’re just expected to accept it and move on to the next cool sounding thing.

The pacing was also pretty bad and there wasn’t any tension. When you have a book that’s this short you need to make every scene count. This book did not do that. We get nowhere plot wise over halfway into the book and I was so bored and didn’t care about any of the elements that were supposed to add conflict and tension.

The main character also talks about “using her anger to fuel her” and I swear I skimmed the whole book and it was used over 15 times. It was so repetitive and I’m like...is this your whole personality? Girl...get some help. Also, for some reason people blame her for a everything going wrong in the town when literally it was other people’s decisions and she just happened to be very loosely connected to them?? Like, it didn’t make ANY sense.

There were a few interesting things but I can’t even remember what they were right away I really have to think about it. The concept of the second sight is cool and the type of faeries are cool but not really a whole lot of new or intriguing things. The scarf as a way to see either the real world or the second world is kinda neat? But other than that I was really underwhelmed.

I've never been more captivated by a book than I was with Fae Hunter! The author's writing style kept the story interesting and perfectly spaced. I started reading and didn't stop until the end!

I loved Allie, the main character. Strong, determined, and willing to push through pain - physical and mental - is what every great heroine is made of. With no care of her own self, she dove into everything headfirst and a determination born of righteousness and love.

I love the dark, beautifully twisted fae, and this author portrays them as the painfully sensual creatures of lore.

I can't wait to read the next installment!

Refreshingly Unique!

I absolutely loved this book! Nothing is as it seems in this book, and almost everyone has an ulterior motive. The masterful twists and shocking revelations had me completely enthralled. I loved that I couldn't always predict what was going to happen, or if I did there was always more that I didn't see coming. And the refreshing take on the fae and second sight was awesome! I can't say enough great things about this book. I'm so excited for book 2! I need to know what happens next for Allie like NOW! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fast-paced, action-packed, thrill-ride of a book with a fae twist. You won't regret it, Sarah K.L. Wilson knows how to spin a fantastic tale of deception, anguish, love, and revenge.

It is a book that, perhaps in the technical aspect, meets all the requirements, but I think it lacks that special something that causes you to become completely attached to the characters.
And as a romance, it leaves a little to be desired, but I think I'm beginning to understand that all of this author's romances are cooked over a very slow heat.

This was a cute and quick read! I wasn't looking to invest a lot of time and thinking into a book series, so this was perfect. And that's definitely not a bad thing!

Wait I actually really loved this....my only problem with it really was that it wasn’t longer (too fast paced??). I was told this has major ACOTAR vibes, and I can’t really say it does. It shows the much more evil side of the fae. Love it.

I loved this book! =D

I'm going to be honest, when I first picked up this book, I thought it was going to go in a totally different direction than the one that it took. And boy, I'm glad they didn't go in the direction I thought it was going too. You see, it starts with this Fae that had appeared in the circle after Allie and her sister had danced around it. And... Well, the Fae wasn't wearing a shirt and was kissing Allie's sister. Very passionately. Yeah... I wasn't sure about this book either. The reason why I continued is because a good friend (Elizabeth) had read it before me and written a review raving about how great the book is. So I read a little further, and I'm glad I did. Just so you know, other than kissing, there is no sexual content. This book is very clean in that regard.

Ahh, the descriptions. I was able to close my eyes and imagine the hills and forest in the story. The insides of the cabins. The Fae. It flowed so well.

Allie was just a delightful character to spend time within the story. She's not naïve, she loves her small-town, and boy can she hunt. I love how the author wrote about her blindness. I haven't read a whole lot of books where the main character is blind and this book is done so well. That scene where she is climbing a mountain to find this magical item had me at the edge of my seat, I was so scared that she would fall.

The plot was absolutely amazing. The story was so sad and true when the people of the small-town would no longer trust Allie after she danced at the stone circle. Although Allie was so selfless and tried everything in her power to get her sister back and remove the Fae from her small village. This book was just setting up the groundwork for the plot and did just a wonderful job with it. I also love how this book has its own lore and fairytales, it made the world a whole lot more richer and grand to see.

I love the witty dialogue that Allie has, especially whenever she talks with Scourvel.

The way that the Fae were described was really well done. They were deceitful creatures that had layers and layers of tangled up darkness. The first layer they looked beautiful, but it's only a deception to hide what they really are, glamour. And pretty much all of the Fae were that way too, evil.

Content in Book:

1. Passionate kisses. An unsettling desire that the Fae have with humans, lust. Seductive.

2. Violence. (Hunting animals for food. Putting a child over a fire and forcing someone to dance for the child's life. Beating people up. Hand-to-hand combat. Killing people then dismembering their remains to remove them. Shooting people with a bow. Nailing people onto a tree. Violence from an unicorn. Etc.)

3. Kidnapping children.

4. Magic.

5. Tattoos that represent the magic.

Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:

Those who want a good book about evil Fae. Good versus evil theme. READ IT, IT'S MY FAVORITE!

Can I just tell you how much I loved this series? Let me count the ways! Reading this series was like being presented with a large bag of my favorite chocolates. I literally inhaled every book. I kept thinking "I really should leave a review for each book" but I couldn't stop reading. I just HAD to know what happened next. When I finished I thought "what should I review?" I decided that most people read reviews of the first book of a series rather than the later books or series compilations so here I go.

First, Sarah K.L. Wilson has a true gift for fast moving action. The action moves so quickly that you can't be bothered if there are inconsistencies. Were there inconsistencies? I don't know and I don't care. The story was too much fun to worry about looking for those things.

Second, Ms. Wilson has a way with combining a lot of elements such as action, romance, horror, violence and humor without making it a mess. Or rather, makes it a yummy mess.

Third, speaking of messes, the MC Allie is a HOT MESS. I loved her. She is suddenly thrown into this fae world (because while wraiths are real, faes are really just an old wives tale). And I do mean suddenly. And that's when the action and killing starts. She's immediately and constantly trying to figure out what's happening, how to save lives and messing up. SOMETIMES she gets it right but more often as not she really screws up. What's hilarious, at least for me, is that as she screws up she tries to tell herself to stop a moment. Take a breath. THINK it through and not react because so far, reacting has only led to further disaster. Only, try as she might, she can't actually do that because it's one thing to say stop, think a moment but when people are dying left and right well...panic naturally sets in.

There's so much more to love about this series. I loved how the romance is so intricately tied to the horror and humor. The author's creative use of terms of endearment is probably one of the highlights. The wicked, evil, deadly, handsome yet ugly (there are glamors upon glamors here), romantic, funny fae Scouvrel calls her at various times such unique names as "Nighmare," "Wingless fury," and "Spine's shiver." That's just a few of them (and if you've read Fly with the Arrow, then you'll see she really goes out with the creative endearments in that one). In fact, the description of Scouvrel wonderfully describes how it all works as Allie herself says: how incredibly like Scouvrel to mix sweet words with insults and hints of evil.

Or one of my favorite examples being when he describes Allie as a fine wine in a flawed bottle (she's a not particularly attractive red head).

So I'm off to read some of her other books while I wait for a sequel to "Fly with the Arrow." Off I go.

Edit: Just as good as the first time around!

I started another series by this author last year and when I found out she was writing a book about fae, I was sold! No questions asked, just give it to me.

Although I love fae, I don’t like all books about them. I wasn’t a fan of The Cruel Prince series but Acotar is my life. Of course, all books with fae are quite different. The fae in this book are deadly predators who love trickery. They are more beautiful than anything you have ever laid eyes on. From the beginning where they were described, I knew this was going to be good.

“I’ve heard every Faerie story there is. And I plan on ruining them all.”

Allie’s sister has been taken and she will stop at nothing to get her back. Little does she know that things will get much worse for her. Honestly, she stayed strong through it all. No freak outs. I would have had a ton!

One of the issues she faces is going blind. Not completely blind as she can see the spirit world, like the fae who lurk around her village. I loved this aspect and thought that it was really cool.

Allie is also quite outspoken and can’t be rather sassy. She had me laughing multiple times.

“I’ll remember that,” I said gravely. No one liked a smug goat, either and yet Heldra was still alive.”

Another interesting thing was how her friend, Olen Chanter a bard, could play music that helped guard them from the wicked creatures. I have never seen a bard used in that way before besides in video games. Go bards!

“The music keeps them back – the Fair Folk. It blinds them – almost like our own kind of glamor. What my father and I do is like guard work. We’re guarding all of you against the Shining Ones. Against the spirit world.”

Let me tell you what I really loved, the cat and mouse games between Allie and Scouvrel. Oh man! It had me giddy.

“I think you mistake how much power you have, little Faerie. You are the one in my cage.”

I’m looking forward to book two and can’t wait to see what the fae and their world have in store for us mortal beings.

WOW this is a great start to this deliciously trope-filled young adult romantic fantasy about a viciously humorous mortal girl and her quest to hunt, trap, and conquer powerful fae. Well written the author has built an incredible world and along with a gripping and addictive storyline and a fab kick ass heroine who is confident and strong, I cannot wait to read what happens next!

Alrighty then!
When you have a college student who's currently confined to her dorm room with not enough homework to keep her busy, free books are a lovely gift.
This book is nothing revolutionary, but has a lot of my favorite things. Such as:
--Tough female leads
--Tough female leads who happen have opportunity to be rough and do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals which get a lot more complicated as the story progresses
--Male characters that are supposed to be shady, but, for some reason, are just so darn likable.
--Unique settings
--Fae that are amoral and absolutely despicable but capable of some sort of kindness
--People that are shown to be capable of the same sort of deceit and unkindness that they fae are. ( I adore this lovely sort of contrast: where the "good" are shown to be sort of awful and the awful are shown to have some goodness)
--POWER WITH WORDS OH MY GOODNESS

There were a few things that I wasn't super fond of. There was a spot or two where a word was used that seemed out of place for the setting. Too modern or too common. It kind of shook the world building a bit for me, but again, it was twice tops, so not a biggie.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I still have 4 books left in the series and only 2ish days left in my quarantine. So.
