Emergency Vet - Horse Shot with an Arrow

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jillian. Last night my beloved horse, Prim, was shot in the neck with an arrow. We don’t know the details yet of who or why, but the sheriff’s department is investigating.

Our local vet attempted to remove the arrow but ultimately sent us to NC State Equine Veterinary Hospital. Initial x-rays showed the arrow at over 9.5 inches deep into her neck. The arrow was barbed, old, and dirty. After the vets at the hospital removed the arrow they realized that the arrow went deeper than initially thought. It came very close to a neck joint, but they do not yet know if it was hit. The wound is upright and unable to drain, so a bit of a mess to see specifics. The soft tissue department is evaluating whether or not they can cut a drainage hole. Her wound is very large and very deep. Keeping infection from spreading will be the priority at this moment.

Prim and I have been together 1.5 years and have grown to become embarrassingly close. Prim is a 2014 thoroughbred who retired from racing in 2018. We have been training with aspirations of Eventing.

I am in shock, angry, and scared. In the short term, Prim is staying in the hospital for at least 5-7 days so they can do everything possible to keep the infection from spreading. Once we get through this first stage we will be on a long road to recovery. I would do anything to help Prim. I will be making the 2 hour trip to visit her in the hospital as often as they will let me; I love her more than I can say.

Thank you for your time, your consideration, your positive thoughts, and your generosity
