Climate change is undoubtedly high on every list of controversial subjects. Despite extensive evidence to support it, climate change has become a major political issue with deniers and advocates each jockeying for the public’s opinion. The American Association for the Advancement of Science states that "Based on well-established evidence, about 97 percent of climate scientists have concluded that human-caused climate change is happening” and our prestigious National Academy of Sciences states that "Scientists have known for some time, from multiple lines of evidence, that humans are changing Earth’s climate, primarily through greenhouse gas emissions." More than 200 international organizations also support the scientific evidence indicating that climate change has been caused by the actions of humans.

The use of fossil fuels is one of the major causes of rising CO2 levels, which leads to our warming planet. Fossil fuels like crude oil are essential not only for energy production but for many things that we would consider essential in our lives. Plastics are all over our homes and businesses. Crude oil also provides the raw materials for a host of chemicals that are the precursors for insecticides, beauty products, clothing, pharmaceuticals, asphalt and thousands of other products we use every day. The bottom line is while it is easy to say that we need to curtail the use of fossil fuels, we still need to find a new way to produce these essential products.
