CULT Committee held a public hearing on media freedom and pluralism, but also on possible future developments of the media sector.

Growing political and financial pressure and interferences during the last decade have impacted the sector negatively. Vertical concentration and illiberal legal measures have made it very difficult for journalists to fight misinformation and fake news and maintain editorial independence, but also in certain cases has put their lives in danger. The situation is of course aggravated further by the COVID-19 crisis, where our citizens are in particular need of objective and diverse information and analysis.

Against this background, the goal of this public hearing was to assess the state of media freedom and pluralism in Europe, and to inform CULT Committee members on the perspective for this sector in mutation.
