Terry Crews knows a thing or two about marriage.
After all, the America's Got Talent host is fast approaching his 34th wedding anniversary with wife Rebecca King-Crews. His secret to success in a relationship? It's all about freedom.
"The secret is you cannot love someone and control them at the same time," he told E! News' Francesca Amiker on the 30th annual Movieguide Awards red carpet Feb. 10. "Never forget that. When you know there's a difference between love and control, you've got the secret. Now it becomes magic."
As for how the couple is celebrating Valentine's Day? Terry joked he bought Rebecca, who is the founder of REBECCA CREWS LLC, her own fashion show at New York Fashion Week 2023—an event he caught a red-eye flight to be at after the Movieguide Awards.
It's safe to say Terry made it and that he was more than proud of her NYFW moment as he wrote on Instagram Feb. 11, "@therealrebeccakingcrews never ceases to AMAZE. This is a dream come true and she earned every bit of this!"
While we now know Terry's mantra for love, Rebecca has also shared her secret to a long-lasting marriage: "I'd say marry for your best friend," she told E! News' Giuliana Rancic at the 2018 E! People's Choice Awards.
As it turns out, Terry was such a friend to Rebecca that he almost didn't become her significant other. "He almost got stuck in the friend zone," she noted. "He was a little too nice."
Terry jokingly added, "I had to earn it."
Fast forward and Terry and Rebecca have given many glimpses into their relationship over the years—including navigating a traumatic time when Rebecca learned she had stage 1 breast cancer.
Only a few weeks after receiving her diagnosis, Rebecca shared how Terry reacted when he learned of her medical result.
"My husband has watched me go through a lot, but the look on his face…he looked at me like I was going to die," she told People in 2020. "He told me it felt like his insides were melting. I said, ‘I need you to be strong for me,' and he said, ‘Okay' and hugged me, but I think he needed that hug."
Rebecca eventually underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. While on the mend, she told the outlet Terry was by her side, noting, "I have to give him his props because he's been cooking for me, helping me bathe, and just really stepping up."
Perhaps it makes the good times that much sweeter.
