Obituary of Annette Sutherland
Annette Sutherland, 99, of Kokomo passed away on January 15, 2024 at her temporary residence, Primrose. She died from residual side effects after an acute pneumonia infection in the Fall of 2023. Annette was born on May 16, 1924. She married Frank Sutherland on June 19, 1946. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2008. Her parents Eloise Lutz McDonald and James Russell McDonald, and her sister Mary Caroline Lutz-McDonald preceded her in death as well. Annette is survived by her four children: Doug Sutherland, Mike Sutherland, Josie Sutherland (Bob Luckenbill) and Craig Sutherland (Lori Sutherland). She has three grandchildren: Joe Sutherland (Nellidene), Janeen Melby (Mike) and Annie Hancox (Alistair). She has six great grandchildren: Henry, Sam, Tommy, Joshua, Walter, and Flora. Also, she is survived by her five Canadian nephews and their extended families and three U.S. nephew/nieces and their families. Annette Sutherland lived her early life in Illinois. After graduating from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois with a B.A. degree in the Arts in 1946, she moved to Kokomo, Indiana after a short stint in Ohio. Annette and her husband Frank enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Both enjoyed raising four children, playing golf, bridge, visiting family, and travelling. As Annette grew older, her spirit stayed young due to her sense of humor, her wit, her love of the arts, her joy in the simplest situations and bridge. She read two newspapers daily and was a prolific reader all her life. After her husband Frank died, she asked her children what she should do next. They all said, “HAVE FUN”. She spread the sense of fun to everyone she encountered. Our family wishes to specifically thank the Tuesday afternoon duplicate bridge group at the Senior Center, her dear friends who gathered on Thursday afternoon during Covid for duplicate bridge and the joy of being together, special friends (including an English teacher) and great neighbors in her early life on Rainbow Drive and starting in 1963, Devon Woods. Please no flowers. Annette Sutherland, her deceased husband, Frank Sutherland, and our family wish that everyone “donate” an act of kindness, an act of compassion and spread a sense of joy everyday of their lives to make the world a better place. A private graveside ceremony in Illinois will be held at a future date.
