I-70 No Name Tunnel Lighting Replacement

About the Project

Starting on Monday, April 6, 2020, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contract partner Casper Electric will begin a lighting replacement project on the No Name Tunnel on I-70 from mile point (MP) 116.5 to MP 118.5 east of Glenwood Springs, CO. The $3.5 million multi-year project has an anticipated completion date of Feb. 2022.  Additional work will consist of:

  • Slotted drain installation for storm water management.
  • Removal of old lighting system and installation of new lighting system.
  • Programming and integration of lighting control center.

Tunnel lighting

Crews work to replace the racks and lighting in tunnels 5 and 6 on US 6 in Clear Creek County.

Proposed Work Schedule

The project will be in operation Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 7 pm. A winter shutdown will be necessary each year to allow for safer conditions for the traveling public and workers due to winter conditions. The shutdowns are expected to begin Nov. 2020 until mid March 2021 and Nov. 2021 until mid Jan. 2022.

Work in 2020 will focus on westbound tunnel work while 2021 will focus on eastbound work and finalizing any testing and programming for the full lighting system. Lighting replacements are being performed in coordination with the I-70 Glenwood Canyon surface improvement project and communications will be maintained for the duration of the project.


Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect a west or eastbound single lane closure during work hours.
