      Computer Science Education Week is coming up once again this December from the 7th to the 13th! Unlike a one day launch event like CodeVA has hosted in previous years, this year we have an entire virtual week of speakers, family nights, kids activities, and sessions for educators. We can’t wait to #BringCSHome with you!

CS Ed Week Launch is the kickoff event for our whole week of activities where students and teachers alike can learn about CS across VA. Attendees will hear from a diverse range of CS professionals along with Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, First Lady Pamela Northam, Secretary of Education Atif Qarni, and State Superintendent James Lane

Algorithms are a fundamental part of computer science. Eureka Workshop will be leading activities that explore how both bees and dessert chefs need algorithms in order to communicate. Join us to learn about sequencing, patterns, looping, and randomness as we create our own group algorithms in real time!

Join us for an App in an Hour event where participants will be learning how to code a classic shell game using Code.org’s App Lab. Viewers will learn how to use block code to create a game with variables, functions, and loops. This activity is perfect for beginning to intermediate learners aged middle school to adult.

DoodleJams are collaborative drawing time hosted by our Eureka Workshop and for CS Ed Week our special guest artist will be Saxton Moore! Saxton Moore is a two times emmy nominated artist who’s worked with the likes of Nickelodeon and Netflix. Students of all ages can join this online drawing session and have fun with a career professional and their friends!

Family Code Night

The effect is extraordinary: huge turnouts, great fun, inspiration – plus the personal engagement of happy, motivated parents, a unique and largely untapped force in K-5 computer-science education.

Presented by CodeVA’s Director of Education, Rebcca Dovi, this webinar will provide principals, educators and parents with necessary understanding of the Virginia Computer Science Education Mandate. The Mandate requires schools to integrate computer science into core instruction from kindergarten through eight grade. Through CodeVA’s partnership with the national CS is Elementary program, schools will also see how to post their computer science goals in a visualization of CS programs in each school and district in the state.
