Why this petition matters

Please join us in our fight to Keep the Forest! Wake Forest! by signing this petition.

Open space that taxpayers bargained for, and then defended in the courts should remain OPEN SPACE.

Currently national homebuilder Toll Brothers wants to build a massive 350-plus housing development in the Wake Forest and Wake County drinking water supply area on the former Wake Forest Golf Club. This development will destroy the riparian forest on the 147- acre property, and it will involve massive earth moving operations and clear cutting of trees and vegetation that currently protect our drinking water and the future vitality of our growing town.

Placing a massive housing development on the golf course property that was designated Open Space in a bargain with the town was never a good idea - not when it was first proposed in 2006, not in 2009 and clearly not in 2021!

As the Town of Wake Forest Board of Commissioners decided in 2009, we ask them to deny consideration of this proposed housing development on the former Wake Forest Golf course when it comes to them. For this project to move forward, the Wake Forest Town Board must first decide to hear the case. Tell them it is not worth the risk to our future.

Say NO to TOLL or any new housing units in the Falls Lake Watershed open space and our water supply area. KEEP IT OPEN. KEEP THE PUD.

The fact is - ALL of us - every Wake Forest and Wake County resident are stakeholders in the preservation of this clean, beautiful and historic watershed property. Our taxpayers’ dollars were used to develop neighborhoods around the property that were built in a way that protected the course. Our taxpayer dollars were used to defend an agreement that secured the golf course as Open Space for future generations. The watershed is just too important for the town to risk massive earth moving and clear-cutting operations which will forever change the land, potentially damage Horse Creek and the natural springs that protect it, while forcing wildlife onto already crowded the roads.

A little history, in 2009, the Town of Wake Forest Board of Commissioners REFUSED to CONSIDER a similar, but less intensive housing development. The previous owner sued, and the town board defended their decision all the way to the NC Supreme Court where the town prevailed keeping the PUD/SUP intact.

For this project to be approved, the Wake Forest Town Board must VOTE a CHANGE in the zoning and AMEND this1999 Planned Unit Development (PUD) and Supplemental Use Plan (SUP) that it created and currently protects the watershed area from over-development. In a 1999 PUD agreement, the previous owner of the Wake Forest Golf Club designated the golf course as OPEN SPACE in a bargain with the town to build the Fairway Villas and a 10-unit subdivision. Now a new owner wants to overturn the deal. He knew he bought a PUD when he got 147 acres for $325,000.

Let your voice ring loud and clear. Uphold the 1999 PUD/SUP agreement.
